The Primordial Truth, The start of an army

Hi guys,

I've been umming and erring about which legion to go with for a while, first Night Lords then Red corsairs (Not a legion I know) then Iron Warriors. The one that has always stuck out for me has been Word Bearers. So I kitbashed a Dark Apostle and test painted a couple of guys and I'm 100% on board. I love the idea for scheming Zealots leading a warband of other zealots and daemon Engines. First up is the Apostle, I went for Evil looking but not over the top, not too much mutation as they're mostly going to be end of the Heresy still dabbling in Chaos kind  of warband. General idea is a Dark Apostle, Cultists, CSM with a heavy weapons with some 'zerkers and some armigers, maybe some Maulerfiends.

Dark Apostle:

First two test guys, I couldn't get the light right to show highlights properly. Also not sure if I should go with Yellow eyes or something else. I tried green but it didn't come out great. The runes on the legs have come out pretty great. C&C Very welcome

A solid start! They look like I'd imagine the Word Bearers that attacked Calth at the beginning of the HH. Looking forward to you expanding on these minis!

Thanks man! That's the general idea, they haven't quite turned into the screaming lunatics and fanatical zealots of 40k.

I'm still not sure on eye colour. Yellow makes me think of evil, like a werewolves' but I don't think it goes that well with the red. Maybe a green or blue would work?

The Apostle looks great and will look even better once you give him the same attention you've given your Marines, the extra details and script really pop :tu: I think yellow eye pieces works fine for the scheme, but green or blue would also do it. I think you only need to make them look a bit more like a lense, a little bit of blending/highlighting and a gloss varnish should do that I think?

Thanks dude! I'll give the yellow lens look a go and see how it looks. Blue seems to be working for me so far but yellow may change my opinion

Got a lot of work done today. I built 20 cultists, 2 armigers and a couple of heavy weapon's guys. I particularly like my Armigers so far. I have some barbed wire that I'm going to add to it. I also finished a marine and started a couple more. I tried out a light blue for the eye lenses and it's a lot better and works well together. C&C always welcome

Still needs some work and cleaning up but most of the way there:

Blue works for me as a lense colour, it's best to pick a colour you can work with easily as it's not a large area to paint :) I like the Maulerfiend additions to the Armigers, shoulder pads especially :tu: Looks like you're well on the way to a force with such speedy assembly, but be careful not to outstrip your painting too much (speaking from experience  ).

Are the armigers just gonna have empty "eye holes" or will there be something inside?

I'm not too sure. On the one hand no eye makes it look eyrie and weird looking, on the other hand one large bulging eye could be quite cool. I'm open to input and opinions. I've got about another 4 of the same "face plate" bit so I might mock it up and see what it would look like

My plan is to get about 1000 points built up for a game on Saturday and I won't build any more until they're all painted. Usually I build everything then start painting but I'm very keen on not wearing myself out. All the extra bits are from the maulerfiend kit, even the face plate. I saw the face plate bit in my bits box and realised it's telling perfect size and chaosy looking enough

Not sure if it helps, but I did a hellbrute with a single eye that I think turned out well - photos are here:  http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346143-the-judgment-on-kadeth-dr-ruminahuis-emperors-children/?p=5053619

The effect would likely look good on an armiger as well.

Nice start, when I do the yellow lenses on my own word bearers I do a basecoat of averland sunset then wash with nuln oil and pop some highlights of yriel yellow on then I highlight the armour underneath the eye in a bright orange.

But blue is a nice contrast colour on word bearers I use it for all sorts of bits and bobs.

Cool, man. I don't necessarily want to influence your choice, was just curious. Depending on how you paint them, it could end up looking good.

I'm always up for listening to people's input. I'm hoping I can pull off the No eye look

They're pretty sick dude, hats off to you!  I'm going to give having No eye a go. Lets me do some weird and wacky stuff with them

Awesome start on your Word Bearers! I love that Dark Apostle. He is spot on!

and I love that you used those cawdor guys as cultists. They looked perfect for that role since they first leaked images of those minis!

There's a very thin line between the Corpse Emperor fanatics and the Chaos Gods Fanatics. I'm not a huge fan of the normal cultists so these are perfect

I figured I would do a brighter blue to contrast with the dark red and black. My averland sunset dried out unfortunately so I did it with white and a Lamenter's yellow glaze. I think your way would have looked way better than mine :biggrin.:

A good start, the cracked armour on the lower leg is really nicely done. I think the blue lenses are just right.

Thanks man!

So I got quite a lot more built today and yesterday, I got a Sorcerer built, 20 Khorne Bezerkers and a Rhino. Very pleased with the Sorcerer:

Painting wise, I finished another bolter guy and a Lascannon guy to finish my first squad. I think I'm there with the runes and the script, maybe not so much with the Astrological shapes. C&C very welcome:
