The Twisted Runes

Ho Fraters!

I haven't been about on the boards so much lately aside from throwing likes around the Hall of Honour.

That said I hope you won't me taking a moment to shamelessly self promote. My second short story for Black Library was released yesterday.

https://www.blacklibrary.com/prod-home/new/the-twisten-runes-ebook.html

From the page:-

The Silver Skulls are descended from the genetic line of the Ultramarines, scions of Primarch Guilliman himself – and yet they could not be more different from their forebears. The warriors of the Chapter will not march to war unless the auguries guide them, as interpreted by the psychic Prognosticators. When one such Prognosticator – Rhondus – foresees the death of all his brothers in the runes, he sets out to prevent the catastrophe. But will his actions save the Silver Skulls or forever damn them?

I'd love to hear what you think.

I'm super-excited to get to this, but I've some 'meta' questions, such as:

- what (if anything specific at all) does your research involve for this sort of thing? Recap of certain stories, skim of 'the canon so far' relating to the Skulls etc?

- how much 'head canon', to use ye olde fanon parlance, do you develop around the story/background that doesn't make it onto the page? (How much does? :biggrin.: )

- what brought you to the Skulls, in particular? (I'm guessing the notion of their 'deviance' from their forebears, but that could be very wrong.)

As said: I'm keen to delve into this. Hope you've had fun in the process of conceiving/gestating it too!

Good questions.

I didn't need to do a tonne of research on this one. I had already read The Gildar Rift and had a decent idea of the Chapter's character. I looked back at previously mentioned characters to get an idea of naming conventions but that was about it.

In this case pretty much everything made it into the story. In fact a lot more was developed during the planning stage then I had in mind when writing the original pitch.

The story actually began as an overall concept that needed an Imperial force to be slotted into it. The nature of the Silver Skulls made them the most appropriate fit for the story I wanted to tell.
