Blood of Iax

Not long until this is released on the masses. I’m always interested in new authors and am keen to buy their books to support them but that’s about all attracting me to this. It orks v ultramarines which is a little on the unimaginative side and pretty darn uninteresting if you ask me. Buttt would love to hear people’s thoughts on it when released. Spoilers welcome!

Ugliest limited edition yet too.

I don’t know if I’d call Robbie MacNiven a new author personally. Not that there needs to be a specific cut off, but he’s had I believe 5 novels released by BL in addition to some shorter form stuff. His Carcharodons novels are quite enjoyable, and I thought The Last Hunt was excellent as well (especially the latter third or so).

I agree that Orks vs. Primaris Ultramarines (or really Orks vs Marines in general) isn’t the most inherently exciting of conflicts. I’d love to see a non Space Marine centered novel from MacNiven at some point. However, both Red Tithe and The Last Hunt have done interesting things with what at the outset seemed like straightforward Space Marine engagements.

I think I count Robbie MacNiven as among the new BL authors... He has been so very prolific though:yes:

Orks do unfortunately get the "force of nature" treatment more often than not, which does not often make for the most interesting reading. That's too bad, since unlike that other force of nature (Tyranids) the Orks have a wonderful comedic/horror element to them which makes them very compelling (at least for me). And before anyone jumps on me and points out that the Orks were a created war race, I know that. But being essentially sentient 'shrooms they are insanely prolific and come at you like a storm (thus the force of nature element).

That being said, the comedic/horror aspect of the Orks lends itself more easily to more visual media like comic books. This was done quite well in Deff Skwadron by Gordon Rennie and Paul Jeacock, and Blood and Thunder by Dan Abnett, Ian Edinton, and Daniel Lapham. Dan Abnett has done a little bit of Ork writing in some of his Iron Snakes, Gaunt's Ghosts, and Eisenhorn stuff, but not much. I'm hoping Master Robbie will flesh out the Orks a little bit and give them some of the love they are due. He's certainly capable of it, being a rather talented fellow:wink:

I’ve nothing at all against ork books, in fact I find orks one of the best enemies of mankind. Helsreach and some of the Beast Arises series have potrayed them wonderfully. It’s the ultramarine ork combo which is so cliche and overdone (usually badly).

It would be great and really interesting if mcniven could do it differently and better. I am probably giving him the new label as I haven’t read anything by him yet... new to me might be better!

Rob is a relatively new BL author with quite an impressive work:

- Carcharodons

- The Last Hunt - a White Scars novel

- A entertaining audiobook named Vox Tenebris

- An audio about Perturabo

- Some Wolves stuff during the events of Wrath of Magnus

- At least one story about Ortan Cassius Deathwatch Killteam

- And a Warhammer Fantasy novel

Did I miss something?

Overall, he's improving with each novel. The Blood Tithe (first Carcharodons novel) was indeed a perfect debut. He doesn't have to hide behind the likes of Chris or Aaron. And he just started. Additional note: he writes about 1-2 books each year....at least :P

Tbh, I'm a bit confused about BL's release schedule. The Last Hunt is out for quite a while but I haven't seen it here in Germany.

Quite different from Blood of Iax. It's already out in Germany. Bought it about a week or even 1 1/2 weeks ago.

Haven't started it yet but it will be my next one after Dark Imperium.

@Kelborn - Yeah, I don't get BL's release dates either...… years ago they used to be as regular as clockwork. Even with HB releases you could count on the MMPB copy being released NLT 12 months. Perhaps it's based on a sales algorithm..... best buy lots more copies of your favorite series:teehee:

  • 3 weeks later...

Just finished the first chapter....so far so good:thumbsup: Unfortunately I don't have much time for personal reading right now, so I snatch a few pages before sleep cycle. Unfortunately, I rarely get past a couple of pages before.....zzzzzzzzz……. It's not a comment on the quality of the writing. It's a comment on that I can't cut it on four hours of sleep anymore.

Anyway, Blood of Iax is off to a good start and I'll comment  when I'm further in or finished. Anyone finished it yet?

I’m almost finished this one. I like it overall. I’ve always had problems taking Orks seriously in the fiction settings and Rob did a respectable job with the Orks so far. There are some twists which keep the Orks interesting which I confess is a challenge to me.

The Primaris brothers are actually a good contrast. Ironically they are similar in personality to me and my brother... I imagine many people will relate to this.

The ‘war speeches ‘ are a little thick but I guess to be expected. The situation is dire of course but the grind in the planet is good and interesting. Rob hits on what an Ultramarine is very well in my opinion. A few scenes really struck a chord with me. So far so good.
