How to build a list?

Hi, I'm a noob when it comes to list building and haven't really paid attention to 8th until recently so have no idea how the list building side goes.

I have (although not all have to be used)

A space marine captain with power sword and bolter

A primaris lieutenant with power sword

5 primaris Hellblasters with assualt plasma incinerators

5 primaris Intercessors with bolt rifles

5 primaris Reivers with bolt carbines

10 man Devastator Squad with Lascannon, multimelta, plasma cannon, grav cannon and 5 Bolters

How would I arrange this into a list? And what would make the list more playable if needed

Thanks very much

Throw them together, call it a patrol and you have built your first list..

what would make it more playable is two more troop choices to make a battalion. Either intercessors or tactical marines or scouts.

Best choice would be intercessors or scouts, most fun to me are tacticals with some special/heavy weapons and a transport, either a rhino or a drop pod

After that add anything you like, avoid playing jerks and you'll be fine.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'm doing 4th Company Ultramarines so would like to keep my army within the lore (with exception of having primaris in there too) so I would probably use tactical squads, would some assualt marines be worth it or nah? And how do command squads work now? Do they each take up separate slots?

Thanks again

So I've been playing around on battle scribe trying to see what I can do and have come up with this list:

Is this ok for a starting list? I've tried to make it fluff friendly haha

Thanks

there's nothing wrong with the list, but it may be very hard to make the devastator squad do work. All the different weapons have different ranges, and by walking them in range they get a -1 to hit penalty. You're probably better of ignoring the load out the squad has in the books and picking weapons with at least the same range. To be honest, I would be surprised if a dev squad would always use the same weapons, that doesn't make any sense at all.

Assault marines, while cool, are definitely not worth it. I use them a lot because I think they are cool, but they don't perform great in any way. I get the best result with a squad of five and two flamers.

It's always fun (but a bit confusing) when you start out.

Points to consider:

Your army needs to have the following tools:

1. Something to kill Monsters/vehicles

2. Something to move swiftly to seize objectives

3. Psychic power

4. Some type of Close Combat.

5. Some type of air force/anti air

6. Enough bodies on the board

7. Transports for your troops/units

I know that you don't have all of the following but it may give you an idea of what to work towards. I'm going to assume you're not a millionaire. If you are (good for you!), you may want to invest in lots of things at once - say 3 fliers at once, not one, etc

Start with 750- 1000 point blocks - say: Librarian, x2 Tactical squads in razorbacks- Twin Lascannons (tactical squads are more flexible than primaris marines), a dreadnought (Twin Lacannon/Dread CC Weapon - use close combat in a pinch), x5 Helblasters for the first block.

Second Block: Captain, x1 Tac Squad in razorback (Twin Lascannons)/or a drop pod to support your Terminators, Stormtalon/stormhawk, Assault Terminators - always Deep Strike these (Thunderhammer/Storm Shields).

I prefer to give my tac squads: combi plasma and plasma guns.

In 8th, power swords are cheap so sergeants get one each. I leave heavy weapons for vehicles or dev squads (to be honest, I don't like devastator squads at all due to their need to sit still - Helblasters are probably better here).

Other units for the future:

Predator Tank (All Lascannons)

Stormraven Gunship (wonderful unit).

After this you can work out your play style.

Landraiders with Terminator Assaulters?

Storm Ravens?

Primaris Units with Primaris Tanks and Primaris Dreads?

The only real advice I can give you is to play as much as you can against the best players you can. You'll lose a lot at first but you'll get better.

Anyway, I'm an old, scarred veteran, and the basic above list has served me well (with some tweaks here and there) from the 3rd ed on. Everyone has their own play style but keep the 7 basic points in mind.

....oh, and for the god-Emperor's sake, keep your marines mobile - not sitting still - they're not Imperial Guard...they're made to have no fear and kill the enemies of Man.

Good luck.
