1K EC Armoured Breakthrough

Okay, so I've just gotten back into the hobby having not played since 4th edition. Even then I was more interested in the heresy era, but used to play a mixture of Black Legion and Death Guard in 40k. With the heresy now being a dedicated game, I've settled on starting a loyalist Emperor's Children force.

I've always been more into modelling and painting, but I'm not averse to a few games all the same, so this is more of a starting point than anything else. I've decided to do an Armoured Breakthrough list, since neither of the EC rites are suitable, and fast tanks seems quite fluffy:

Master of Armour: Sicaran Battle Tank – 230 Points

1x Sicaran Battle Tank (Hunter-Killer Missile; Armoured Ceramite; Lascannons)

Terminators – 180 Points

4x Terminators (4x Combi-Bolters; 4x Power Swords)

1x Terminator Sergeant (Combi-Bolter; Phoenix Power Spear)

Land Raider – 245 Points

1x Phobos (Armoured Ceramite)

Predator – 115 Points

1x Predator (Lascannons)

Predator – 115 Points

1x Predator (Lascannons)

Whirlwind Scorpius – 115 Points

1x Whirlwind Scorpius

FYI, I already have the Land Raider and one Predator. Wondering what weaknesses people think a list like this has, or whether I should change the Scorpius out for something else?

Also interested to hear suggestions on what I should add towards a 2k list? I don't want to paint countless predators so I was considering weapon master vets, but I'm not sure they would fare well in a rhino. Then I considered Seekers, but they don't really mesh with the legion rules well...

I get the feeling a 1k list is too small for any useful criticism, so I've put together a tentative 2k list below. It's largely an expansion of the first list: a pride of the legion list that doesn't actually use pride of the legion...

Master of Armour: Sicaran Battle Tank – 225 Points

1x Sicaran Battle Tank (Armoured Ceramite; Lascannons)

Rite of War: Armoured Breakthrough

Praetor – 185 Points

1x Praetor (Tartaros Terminator Armour; MC Paragon Blade; Digital Lasers)

Terminator Chosen – 150 Points

3x Terminator Chosen (Tartaros Terminator Armour; 3x Combi-Bolters; 3x Power Swords)

1x Terminator Standard Bearer (Tartaros Terminator Armour; Legion Standard; Combi-Bolter; Power Sword)

Land Raider – 245 Points

1x Phobos (Armoured Ceramite)

Terminators – 180 Points

4x Terminators (Tartaros Terminator Armour; 4x Combi-Bolters; 4x Power Swords)

1x Terminator Sergeant (Tartaros Terminator Armour; Combi-Bolter; Phoenix Power Spear)

Land Raider – 245 Points

1x Phobos (Armoured Ceramite)

Terminators – 180 Points

4x Terminators (Tartaros Terminator Armour; 4x Combi-Bolters; 4x Power Swords)

1x Terminator Sergeant (Tartaros Terminator Armour; Combi-Bolter; Phoenix Power Spear)

Land Raider – 245 Points

1x Phobos (Armoured Ceramite)

Predator – 115 Points

1x Predator (Lascannons)

Predator – 115 Points

1x Predator (Lascannons)

Whirlwind Scorpius – 115 Points

1x Whirlwind Scorpius

I think dropping one of the Terminator squads is a good idea, as they or the Raider don't benefit from armoured breakthrough at all. The Command squad and Praetor are enough and you can take more AV<13 tanks with the points.

Also why power swords? That squad wants to get in melee with the enemy elite and with so many 2+ saves around those swords will just bounce off the armour.

For your Praetor, iron halo is better than master-crafting.

You're a bit lacking in serious anti-armour. You spew out a ton of medium strength shooting, but Spartans could pose a problem. Of course you can just try to ignore it and focus on the contents inside. Just some food for thought.

Eeeh, I partially agree with our Spiritual Liege and partially disagree: On one hand reducing the scoring units to 4 to drop a terminator squad and Raider is probably decent in order to take more AV 13's, notably more predators or something that can deal with infantry.

Power swords though, I partially agree with: conventional wisdom says 'run them at elites', but with unwieldly weapons you give up martial execution and a pretty significant advantage of being Emperors Children, losing a massive advantage over standard I4 infantry.  A unit with power axes (and a unit with something else that can deal with elites, power axes, power fists, chianfists) I'd think is worth it, but I wou'dn't discount a power sword unit given the lack of any other defensive melee capable unit in dealing with larger groups of legionnaires or fast-movers like Destroyers.  The phoenix power spear sergeants can deal with Artificer sergeants decently, power swords can get choppy with the line troops before a few lucky shots can turn your terminators into ribbons.

Like mentioned, a Spartan might very well cause you issues, though with a fair number of las cannon shots and some maneuvering you might crack it open eventually, but in the meantime you can likely count on losing some serious assets there.  Maybe a Sicaran Venator?  With switching out one Terminator/AC Phobus unit you get 2 more predators (or pred/vindicator: the later because of the lack of 'crowd control') which keeps the scoring unit, and a Sicaran Venator for hunting armour. If you really want to go full armour that is.

This is just my humble opinion based on my own experience and the advice of far more skilled players than me, but as far as terminators go, I think it's a mistake to not have at least one chainfist in every terminator squad. As Spiritual Liege and Vykes said, you are dangerously low on things that can hurt armor, and one chainfist per squad makes every unit at least a viable threat to the heavier stuff that will shrug off power swords. I would think about building one Terminator squad with armor-hunting in mind, perhaps four chainfists and a thunder hammer on the sergeant.
