Legio Metalica and the forces of the 73rd Expedition

I was a little slow getting him battle ready but hopefully the same thing wont happen with the Reavers and Warhounds I've got sat on my desk (alongside some of the fanmade Epic Horus Heresy stuff)

He still need decals but I've not decided how I want to play that yet, I either wait and hope that GW/FW release a transfer sheet for Metalica, get my own printed or freehand it, I can't decide.  But, for now Mors Incarnadine is ready to walk!

Mors Incarnadine and the war on Mycenae

Tasked as they were with the eradication of an Ork Waaagh! splinter which had found itself in the resource rich but otherwise unremarkable Mycenae system the 73rd Expedition fleet petitioned Legio Metalica for aid, given their long history of war against the Greenskins around Charadon it was the logical choice. The lords of Metalica agreed and a Demi Legio of 35 God Engines accompanied the 73rd Expedition to Mycenae.

The engine designated Mors Incarnadine acquitted itself well in the following four years of war, scoring a total of 8 confirmed Engine Kills on Gargant class Orkiod constructs, but it wasn't until the aftermath of the War that the engine proved its true worth.  Caught on the fringes of Lorgar's Ruinstorm the 73rd found itself isolated and ignorant of events taking place in the galaxy at large.

When a fleet of ships belonging to the XII and XVII Legions broke through the storms the 73rd at first thought reinforcements had arrived.  It quickly became clear that was not the case when the XVII Cruiser Epistle of Fire launched a devastating torpedo salvo detonating the plasma reactor of the Solar Auxillia Bulk Carrier Flame of Jupiter crippling the IV legion Cruiser Thunderhead.

The fleet of the 73rd scattered from the oncoming ships, attempting to extricate themselves from the incoming lance and macrocannon salvos.  While the orbital forces retreated in good order, suffering no further casualties, it allowed a window for the enemy to launch transports and landers onto the planets surface.

One of the most hotly contested zones in the first assault wave were the landing fields on the great crystal plane.  One of the few area in Mycanea's vast deserts open and stable enough to facilitate the landing of Titan and Ordinatus assets.

When the enemy forces began to land, having received news of the attack from orbit Mors Incarnadine along with its Reaver Class escorts Hastati Lux and Pyroclastia held the landing field, along with support elements from the 208th Praetorian Infantry and a garrison force from the IX Legion, for 7 hours of bitter fighting, buying the defenders time to extricate vital ammunition and supplies from the landing field and allowing forces in other locations time to prepare their defences.  When it became clear they could not stop the flow of enemy landers the trio of titans were the last defenders to pull back from the landing fields.  Although Pyroclastia suffered catastrophic damage its weapon systems which would see it sidelined from the fighting until the very last days of the war, to have held their ground as long as they did was a truly magnificent feat.

GO METALLICA!

A very imposing Warlord there Rolltonotdie, very well made! Nice back story too! I think it will really come to life with the decals - so I look forward to that. The base is also a big hit - more please!

Thank you all!  I've been working on the fluff for a while as part of my 28mm HH project so I have a good idea of timelines/battles/deployments etc, expect to see some more over the next few days as I get the Reavers & Warhounds ready.

Thank you and yes, I think decals will really finish it off, I'm going to get some custom decals ordered using the BOLS Metalica decal sheet so once they arrive I can get it finished.

I like the striding pose. It must have been fiddly! You've got a nice balance between red and black/white stripes too.

It was very fiddly and I ended up gluing myself to the thing more than once but I think it was worth it in the end!  I didn't want to overdo the stripes so kept them to a limited number of panels. Both for aesthetics and my own sanity!

For the decals it may be prudent to wait and see if GW comes up with something... Atia hinted that there might be a decal release before the year end, although for which Legios, it is unclear.

Still, Metallica is a pretty important one, so it may be worth waiting...

"Death Incarnate"? Good namefor a Titan. I commend your work assumbling and painting the model.

Almost,  its Crimson Death but thank you all the same :)

I've been hard at work getting the rest of the maniple ready:

The Reaver Victorious Endeavour and the two Warhounds Borophagus and Aelurodon stand ready to fight beside Mors Incarnadine. The final Reaver Hastati Lux is about 70% done, I just need to finish off the edging on the armour plates.  Once thats done I've got some Epic Horus Heresy stuff to paint up before I decide where I want to go next (on to another maniple probably)

Following on from my last post I've also decided to work on a Militia list for Epic so I've picked up some 6mm Victorian British troops and thrown a test base together for the 208th Praetorian Infantry:

I've also been working on some 28mm versions of these guys and I can definitely say they are easier to paint at 6mm!

More fluff will come with the finished maniple :)

They look sweet but the pics seem a bit on the dark side... Anychance for brighter versions?

Your stripe work seems exemplary as does this amazing red.

Thanks! Yeah they came out a little on the dark side,  I'll crack out the light box and get some better pictures :)

Love the progress so far Rolltonotdie - and great to see another different Legio coming to life!

Thanks!  I wanted a fairly well established Legio but one that was less popular,  I actually made the decision years ago when I got a 40k Warhound so when I started these it was the logical decision to make them the same Legio as my 40k one.

Very nice indeed and I agree with Semper about the red. What's your recipe?

Thank you, basecoat Rhinox Hide, Layer Mephiston Red, wash with Chestnut Ink then a final layer of Scab Red :)

Very nice, well done and good idea for the Praetorian

Are they bacchus miniatures? https://www.baccus6mm.com/

They also have a Great War range which probably might have some interesting troops

They are indeed the baccus models, I've been eying up some of their other rangers as different regiments

I can’t readily tell the difference between most Ignatum and Metalica models, is there a defining characteristic I’m missing? I’m strongly considering Metalica for my other legio but I may go off script for a paint scheme.

Ignatum hazard stripes are black and yellow like wasps. That's how I guess the difference at least :D
