2000pts of Deathwatch

Hi guys!

So I’m currently in the process of trying to make my DW more competitive. I find I have to work quite hard to make them hold their own against my opponents (which is quite fun in its own way). I also own a Drukhari army and while it’s fun zooming around blowing people up with disintegrator cannons DW are still my first love and the army I enjoy playing most.

I feel I have a pretty solid list with the following:

== HQ ==

Watch Master

Jump Captain, TH+SB

Terminator Librarian, force axe

== TROOPS ==

9 Veterans

 - 3x SB+CS

 - 4x SB+SS

 - 2x FC

1 Vanguard Veteran

 - CS+BP

5 Veterans

 - 2x Stalker

 - 2x Heavy bolter

 - 1x Missile launcher

5 Intercessors

 - Bolt rifles & aux. grenade launcher

4 Hellblasters

 - Plasma incinerators

1 Inceptor

 - Plasma exterminators

== ELITES ==

Venerable Dreadnought

 - Twin lascannon

 - Missile launcher

== HEAVY SUPPORT ==

Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought

 - 2x Twin lascannon

Leviathan Dreadnought

 - 2x Storm cannon array

 - 2x Heavy flamer

== FLYER ==

Corvus Blackstar

 - Twin assault cannon

 - Stormstrike missiles

 - Hurricane bolter

 - Infernum halo launcher

TOTAL: 2000pts

General gameplan is castle up in the Watchmaster bubble turn 1, then drop down with Leviathan and the plasma from teleportarium on turn two and blow stuff up. Corvus can haul the SB team around to where they are needed. Librarian is there to buff Leviathan to T9 and potentially cast Veil of Time on Jump Cap for easier charges, or just throw out some mortal wounds. Stalker team uses mortal wound stratagems and takes potshots at whatever targets present themselves.

Other options I have available:

An assortment of random Veterans (bolters, shotguns etc)

1 Librarian

1 Chaplain

Artemis

6 Bikers

3 Aggressors

2 Inceptors (with bolters)

1 Razorback

1 Knight Gallant

2 Armiger Helverins

Magnetized options for all the vehicles

So, what do you all think? How do I use my collection to make the boys in black work well on the table? I'm not 100% opposed to buying some extra stuff, although I hope I should be able to make do with what I have.

I kind of like Artemis if he's in the Corvus. I often drop him out, throw his D6 mortal wounds and prepare to die. :)

Otherwise the collection/list looks pretty standard. I really don't know about all the dreads anymore. I am starting to feel like the Armiger collection is perhaps a better choice. I would prefer to keep it Deathwatch as well, but it's a real struggle. (If we are talking strictly competitive).

I love my Corvus, but I can't stand it. It needs some real tweaking. If you're making it work against competitive lists like Dark Eldar (which you play) I'd love to know  how. I find it lasts a turn, and part of that is not the flyer's fault... typically we tend to deploy lots of infantry and little else to attract the heavy shots aside from the Corvus.

I do see a LOT of people using the Leviathan Dread with dual Butchers, but I haven't done so myself yet.

Leviathan is statwise pretty decent but the change to DS really hurts as its guns are so short range

Armiger's with autocannons look really interesting low on CP but solve a lot of problems with range that most Astrates lists suffer from

A choice I've been mulling over is a couple of Whirlwind Scorpius, downside is re-rolls to wound are out upside is volume of fire that can be twin linked. S6 is pretty decent and they need dealing with

The crazy thing about the Armigers is I am using them in multiple armies to fill a much needed role. Whether it be Custodes/Thousand Sons/Deathwatch. To me I think that just means they are good value and give some armies something with range that helps offset the severe disadvantage.

nothing is going to work against Knights. We just don't have the tools, but even the Armiger Warglaive is a fun little unit (I know it gets a lot of bad press).

I mostly agree about the Corvus, although I'm not quite as down on it as most people online seem to be. Funnily it actually seems to be most efficient against Eldar (or Tau) where the -2 to hit makes it quite annoying to deal with.

I've found some success using it mostly as turn one protection for my SB vets and then either hovering it in the Watch Master castle or flying around the edges taking potshots. It's more of a gunship than a transport, and makes for a pretty decent distraction Carnifex. (As a side note; if it had PotMS I think that would fix most of it's issues.)

Against aggressive armies this strategy allows my SBs and Frags to get in the action turn 1 if going second, which can be a lifesaver now that I can no longer DS in my deployment zone turn 1. It's not the best but I certainly have not found it to be a horrible investment. Sure, sometimes the opponent really commits to killing it (and then it will die) but since you can deploy it as far back as you like they might have to overextend a bit to do it if their anti-tank has limited range (Drukhari, for example). If nothing else it draws fire from your real heavy hitters.

Adding a Gallant and 2 Helverins is certainly tempting and quite possibly the safe (and best) choice. I found it sort of hard to fit both a Knight detachmemt and the Leviathan though, and I really wanna give the big dread a chance. He's still being painted but I have big expectations for him once he's finished!

Some gaming groups evolve in 8th at different speeds, in mine vehicles Don't stick around for long and you need board presence and boots on the ground to stand any chance of winning the mission.

Last time I fielded 2 corvus 1 was dead 1St turn the other was left limping on 3 wounds and the last time I tried to use Razors and Dreads my opponent killed 3 vehicles t1 and the other 4 t2. Your 1000 points down by that time so it's game over.

I wouldn't call my gaming group super competative either and any soup fielded is just for variety more than anything

Thanks for all the advice. Had a little think about threat saturation and just how many big robots I could work into a list. Made an alternative list that looks as follows:

=== DEATHWATCH BATTALION ===

== HQ ==
Watch Master

Jump Captain, TH+SB

== TROOPS ==

9 Veterans

 - 3x SB+CS

 - 4x SB+SS
 - 2x FC

1 Vanguard Veteran

 - BS+CS

5 Intercessors

 - Bolt rifles & aux. grenade launcher

1 Hellblaster

 - Plasma incinerator

5 Intercessors

 - Bolt rifles & aux. grenade launcher

1 Hellblaster

 - Plasma incinerator

== HEAVY SUPPORT ==

Contemptor Mortis Dreadnought
 - 2x Twin lascannon

Leviathan Dreadnought
 - 2x Storm cannon array
 - 2x Heavy flamer

=== SUPER HEAVY DETACHMENT ===
Knight Gallant
Armiger Helverin
Armiger Helverin

Storm bolters and Leviathan (most of the time?) in the Teleportarium. Knight Gallant either acts as a big distraction Carnifex or a counterpunch depending on the opponent. The lone Hellblasters give some punch to the squads (and there wasn't really any more exciting way to fill out 60 odd points after all the big stuff was in). General idea is if there is enough armour on the table they can't kill it all. Also gives me a healthy 11 CP (before Teleportarium and Knight upgrades).

One option to consider would be replacing one of the Intercessor squads with the "Devastator" veterans (Stalker, HB, ML) for some mortal wound output. I think Knights and doctrines will eat through my CP pretty quickly anyways though, so I'm not sure if it would be worth it.

Thoughts?
I'm very new (list tinkering still) with deathwatch but I do know how good knights can be. You want to run your gallant with the gauntlet relic and land strider WL trait as house Terryn. This gives you advance 2d6 pick the highest +2" then use the full tilt strat to charge 3d6 pick the highest +2" charge. 21-36" turn one charge with 5x 8 damage attacks WRECK anything they hit
