KT Campaign - Level up

Hey all,

Playing in a couple 100pt campaigns here and encountered different views on this;

When a specialist or fire team level up via gathered experience points are you required to pay the cost for their exp level?

Ex Level 2 Specialist - +4 pts, Fire Team crack troops - Level 2 - +1pts , etc.

Some are suggesting that you only pay the cost to replace dead casualties. Cant seem to find a definitive wording in the rules unless ive missed something.

How are your campaigns treating this?

You definitely have to pay the new increased cost of the model. The longer your guys survive the more elite your team becomes unless you keep switching them out for fresh meat.

That was my interpretation too.

My primary campaign team suffered only 1 dead fire team grunt. The added cost of levels made my team very small so i started drafting new level 1 specialists. Weight of numbers still seems better than experienced specialists.

You can always delete Fireteams and get a fresh one each mission. Leveling up Poxwalkers for example is not that useful. Or if your fireteam got a bad level up. Similar with sepcialists, but you keep the upgraded ones on your rooster. I have many people in my game group complaining that they have to change their one "perfect" setup, I repick my team every game :D

True true, i managed to hit Die Hards on my GSC Neophytes (out of action on 5-6s vs 4-6) its pretty good.

I also have “Lucky” Genestealers lol

You are lucky, then - for my two fire team level ups for my astra militarum killteam I got "Lucky" (reroll 1s for armour saves - not worth it on 5+ save models) and Courageous (reroll failed nerve checks - which I get from my vox caster anyway).  Needless to say, both fireteams experienced premature retirement and I recruited 2 new ones.

Now, if I had rolled die hards (-1 to injury rolls), or skilled (reroll 1s to hit in shooting) for my plasma fireteam, that would be worth the 12 to 20 % increase in model cost - but generally for horde armies the increase in cost just isn't worth what the advance gives you.

Die Hards was quite lucky. I agree, the specialist advances don't really seem worth it as each one is close to the cost of a Lvl 1 fighter.

Seems like the level up should be purchased at the players discretion as long as they have the XP to do so. Would be way less book keeping.

Still loving the game system as a whole though.

That depends upon the faction. In the Grey Knights, for example, the increased cost for level advances doesn't compare to a single model until you have multiple advances.

Overall, though, this is why the rulebook suggests increasing the points value of kill teams at a certain point, allowing you to use those advanced models without infringing on the size of your kill team.

Yeah Ive been suggesting that too in my campaigns. Ive seen some increasing by 5pts / week - that seems decent.
