New speed freaks rule makes no sense

Ork vehicles are mostly noisy, clunky and dirty as hell. So, it's not a lot to imagine that they'd be pumping out gas clouds every microsecond, but just think for a minute. These are speed freaks! The orks that are focused on speed and nothing else, so why on earth would they have a stratagem that focuses on slow vehicles?

When a vehicle is going at breakneck speeds, no smoke cloud that is trailing behind it, is going to give it cover. Especially when the ork vehicles are driving towards the enemy.

Even if said ork vehicle was behind another, it still makes little sense, because then the driver wouldn't be able to see jack all and would most likely crash. Ork will only works on physical stuff they want to work like an ork gun, but not on their driving skills. Even if they are skilled, the chances of driving with a gas cloud in your face 90% of the time is both hazardous as you'll choke from the fumes or you'll swerve out of control and cause a giant car crash. The bigger the group, the bigger the problem.

That's why the billowing smoke cloud stratagem makes no sense.

Just look at the mad max movie. Now that is how I imagine a speed freak ork mechanical army to be like and there's no giant smoke cloud there.

What do you think?

So, the stratagem is a throwback to the rule warbikes had where they gave the model a cover save, because of the dirt and exhaust they produce. No, it doesn't make much sense, but this is Orks. We're a faction dominated by the rule of cool.

I love the gameplay effect. I hope bikes get a points drop, as I would love to return to fielding a 15-boy unit of them, and this would go a long way to making them more survivable.

Look at where the exhausts are on all the Ork vehicles.

Aside from the bikes, the lost of them have the exhausts at the front/middle of the vehicle. Now, even if they're going really fast, if they're producing clouds of thick smoke/soot, most of that would be at the middle/back of the vehicle. Plus the dust they're kicking up, that means it's actually very hard for someone shooting at them to see exactly where the vehicle is in full.

Also, toaee has a good point. It's a nice throwback to older rules.

The Adeptus Mechanicus have a very similar rule with their Dragoons, which pump out clouds of incense which would trail behind them unless a hurricane is blowing it in front of the vehicle. I'm afraid this is just going to have to be a rules abstraction. In 2nd edition 40k there were smoke and blind grenades and you would have to roll for them every turn to see if they drifted or expired. That sounds like a lot of work for a vehicle heavy Ork army so I'd rather the simplified rules.

Besides, the vehicle that can target enemies directly with it's flamethrower exhausts seems even harder to pull off to me. :p

It's enough for the Orks to believe they are harder to hit because of the smoke cloud to make it real.

Please, that's not how Ork resonance works.

It really is :D

Back in 4th warbikes had a cover save due to this. I personally like the -1 to hit strategem. Be nice forcing marines to hit on 4s for a change whilst shooting at them hitting on 3s with shokk rifles :D

You assume the Orks are driving in a straight line and not swerving and doing doughnuts.

Agreed.

I imagine that Orkz drive wonky, and then the exhausts on the sides and the front instead of in the back make it even wonkier.

I'd imagine more than a few Orks point their exhausts forwards on the principle that if you can't see them, they can't see you. #Kunnin

Orkz believe in it, so it works

Oh! I get it, it's silly ummie logic.

I mean -- Sisters of battle can move faster because they believe they can... So, not wrong.

Sure but they're only ummies after all so they have a good excuse for it. their worky bits and know-wots aren't  proppa. It's just science.
