Is Kill Team suitable for kids?

Hi all,

After not playing 40K for ... ages really (well, at least a decade-and-a-half) my interest is peaked once again through kill team.

I havent bought the book yet, but could this be done with an 8 year old who likes his min-craft a bit too much, according to his father ?

We do like to play Hero Quest, so he's quite into throwing dice and moving minis already. I have not played Bloodbowl with him (or a kids' variant thereof) but sometime in the near future he has to .

So, my questions are:

- Does the book gives me the to-hit and to-wound tables I need, or do I need some core 40K book?

- I still have the Dark Vengeance marines x 2, so I could easily do a marine-vs-marine battle using those. Doable? Fun?

- After that, maybe some orks vs marines, etc. I am a bit hesitant for the IG-orders, maybe that's a tad too much in the beginning. Or not?

- Does anyone here have any experience playing kill team with their kids? Or is there a more simpler, better (?), easier way to use some 40K minis and play a short game?

Hope to hear some advise on this!

Cheers,

Jan

p.s. anyone going to the Spiel in Essen tomorrow? :teehee:

The book gives you everything you need, including all the rules for the teams (there are some additional tactics in the specific team boxes which is a bit meh by GW but they definitely aren't needed!)

Definitely doable and whether it's fun or not is up to personal taste.

The only "problem" you'd be running into is that the Kill team rules only allow loadouts that come in the respective boxes of the units and Chaos Marines don't have the options for the weapons and combinations of the Dark Vengeance Chosen so it be a lot of counts-as or proxying.

Whether that's too much is impossible to say for us. You should know best what the 8 year old in question is capable of handling. There are kids who have a good grasp on complex rules rather quickly and there are kids who will never learn even less complex rules be it lack of interest or something else.

It's definitely shorter, but I wouldn't say it's easier. It's definitely more tactical since it's not using the classic "I go, you go" structure like regular 40k.

Not tomorrow but probably Saturday. :tongue.:

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

DV minis: marines vs marines, so no chaos marines. Only the DA.

I have more than enough other plastic crap to upgrade if needed. But doable.. OK!

Hope to score the book a tad cheaper tomorrow, if not --> 35 is still a good deal (softcover price IIRC).

Anyone else?

To be honest, the core 40k rules are really simple (not to mention free) these days, especially if you remove the squad elements and thus leadership rules, too. 5 guys v 5 guys using the core rules could then evolve into full 40k squad-based games or gain a little more depth through Kill Team while retaining individuality.

Experience with my 8 year old daughter: Playable, but will rolled the dice like she was blessed by the emperor himself :D Killteam is quiet playable with Kids, just take the advanced rules out and probably the tactics/command points.

Spiel in Essen: On Saturday.

I've introduced 40k to my 8 yr old son, and while he still struggles with the rules he does enjoy painting and playing the game. He plays a kill team of reivers of a successor chapter of the ultramarines, (half blue, half gold) he hasn't co e up with a name, it's just a heavy reivers chapter to him.

But it's up to you how you go with your child, if he's getting into it, I say go for it and let him get right into it.

Good luck

Thanks all!

I've seen some kill-team action yesterday, at the Spiel in Essen. Good: small board. Bad: indeed, lots of rules... for now.

I've picked up "first strike" for cheap though, I'll go through the scenarios in that. See if he can handle that with his attention span :smile.:.

I'll probably assemble the mins and let him paint them, if he wants.

After that, we'll probably go in the direction of kill-team, or something similar to "40K in 40 minutes". And perhaps build up from there.

Thanks for the info so far, one of the reasons I (still!) like this forum.

Cheers,

Jan

:-D

I am afraid you are right...

Spiel was BUSY, btw. I can't understand why people want to take their kids there anyway, it's noisy and overcrowded. Espescially if you are small (as a kid).

Played some games (The River, nice! and some game with hex-tiles where you have to use followers/workers as worshippers... forgot the name. Both good), bought some stuff. Had a good time but we were all glad to be back at the car and ride home again.

We'll see how it goes though, maybe I'll make a thread in the "general" section about this. Probably will try something this weekend if I manage to glue the minis together this evening.

Cheers,

Jan
