Evil Eye
So an age old practice amongst converters and modellers is taking assorted rubbish and using it as fodder for kitbashes, and it occurred to me that, whilst not everything would be perfect, old/broken/crap toys and figures would be ideal sources of parts for conversions. Many a Tyranid player has made use of the old Mega Bloks Plasma Hatcher eggs as Mycetic Spores (before the introduction of the Tyrannocyte) but I'm wondering what other toys/figures etc would be good for parts harvesting?I've had some thoughts, notably: McFarlane's Alien and Halo figures (specifically the Covenant and Flood figures): Now these were actually quite nice figures to the best of my memory, but broken or counterfeit figures would be great sources of bits for monsters- the Flood figures would be especially nice for Nurgle bits, whilst some of the Covenant figures would be useful for Slaaneshi or Dark Eldar things maybe? The Alien figures they did meanwhile were always a bit rubbish and were always fragile, so they'd be easy (and cheap) fodder for anything you want with a Gigery look (Nids especially). In any event the sculpts are usually very nice, so they'd look great once painted. NECA Aliens and Predators: As above, with the added note that NECA stuff is known for rather bad QC and being fragile. The sculpts are very nice, but the joints are rather likely to fall apart, which means that finding cheap, broken ones on the aftermarket for parts harvesting is pretty easy. Bootleg/Knockoff/Counterfeit figures in general: AliExpress and the like are filled with cheap, badly made knockoffs of good brands of toys, and as such you can get well-sculpted figures (albeit with crap joints) for very reasonable prices. Whilst these are useless as figures because the paint and plastic will suck, for conversion fodder these are veritable cornucopias of bits, as the only important factors for our purposes are the basic sculpt. Obviously it depends very much on the figure as to what you can do with them but there's precious little that hasn't been bootlegged. I've got a few anime figure bootlegs that I'm making into Slaaneshi Daemons for example (albeit those were bought by accident) and the Revoltech figure of Marvel's Carnage is available in cheap reproduction form complete with huge amounts of gribbly mutation parts that would make excellent Chaos Spawn parts.Schleich/Papo: These guys make mono-pose, nicely sculpted dinosaurs, animals and fantasy critters that could easily be cut up into parts for conversions.
