Ultramarines v.s. two armies

Recommended Posts

Hello, folks! Fair warning, this is a long one.

It has been a while since I have posted here because of my new job. I started working at a school, and some of the kids saw me getting boxes of minis. With the help of local government I managed to secure money to get the kids started in Warhammer too. I got the Dark Imperium set and supplied some extras to round them out to around 2000 points.

Now that the kids have practiced shooting each other's armies, they want a piece of mine. We have had smaller scale matches before as practice but next weekend I am going to bring my full list and go against their two lists.

First, my guys. They have grown a lot since the last time I have posted. I started paying for Battlescribe as well, so I am interested to see how this works.

The two armies I am fighting are Death Guard and Raven Guard. The kids have a whole boat load of threats, especially in the Death Guard army, that make it a target rich environment.

So that's that. The kids and their lists are maxed out to ensure that they get the best killy power out of their armies. I let them pick out some of the extras, before you judge the armies too harshly.

My plan to try and win the game is as follows: push up the middle of the board with Hellblasters in a Repulsor, Razorback filled with Characters to support the push (Champion, Apo, Captain, Lieutenant, Tiggy, and the Ancient), and the Dread. The back Castle is Calgar, Chronus in his tank, WW & Thunderfire. All the rest of the forces are there to encircle or deep strike the remaining forces.

I don't know what to really expect from this. Killing the Plagueburst Crawlers is going to be a priority, honestly, because those things cause problems in every game. Does anyone else have any thoughts on how I should handle this? Anything you guys want to suggest to the kids, I will pass on to them as well.

I suppose the first question is do you want the kids to win? They may be mature enough to handle it well or it may put them off 40k because their teacher's toy soldiers beat their toy soldiers.

I know that the general advice is when trying to get people into wargaming in general is do everything in your power to convincingly loose your first game against the new guy. If you utterly thrash them the first time around, it can be a turn off. There are of course people who thrive on this and see it as a challenge so YMMV.

I guess I'm curious what you (and the kids) want to get out of this game. Are you looking to broaden their gaming horizons by letting them face new armies and have to adapt to different strategies? Or are you looking to steam roll them? Perhaps somewhere in the middle? Are you just looking a fun few hours where you and them roll some dice and Forge that Narrative?

I imagine once we know what your intentions are for this game, it will be easier to tailor advice to your particular situation.

Hope this helps and kudos for getting young folks into 40k. I think it's a great hobby to get into when you're school age.

This is a good question I had not considered. They have had this stuff and played matches for a few months, so I think that they are ready for anything. The Death Guard have had good success facing the Raven Guard but it hasn't been all lopsided victories. I guess if I lost by the skin of my teeth that would be best case, but I don't actually think my army is capable of winning a straight up kill game. That DG army has some serious punch, and I am afraid I would get bogged down fighting in the middle. I can drop pod in some Devs and stuff to fight the Plagueburst Crawlers but they are scary.

=][= Little tip - Don't be lazy and copy and paste from things like Battlescribe. It makes it a chore to read and people won't reply as readily as they might.

Examples being you're listing 7 Space Marines in a Tactical squad. It's unnecessary information:

Tactical Squad [9 PL, 173pts]

. 7x Space Marine

. Space Marine Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Chainsword, Melta bombs

. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Missile launcher

. Space Marine w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun

Consider you can do it like this:

Tactical squad - ×10

- Plasma Gun

- Missile Launcher

- Melta Bombs, Chainsword and Bolt pistol (Sergeant)
