Jump Packs

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if the current 40k jump packs were present during the Heresy in some shape or form. Would it be lore accurate if a group of assault marines had the loyalist 40k jump packs?

As far as I know it hasn't been meantioned anywhere which jump packs had been arount in 30k. All we have are the models. But maybe there is some hint in any of the dozens of HH novels.

But my advice is:

Don't do it. I myself have given the sergeant of my Assault Marines a 40 jump pack to let him stand out and make him look more bulky and always have arguments about him with other players. I guess taking a whole unit with 40k packs would provoke even more controversy.

As above, we are only ever told explicitly about one or two patterns of anything in the period, so anything can go. However, I personally would warn against it, the aesthetic just doesn't work for me, the 40k packs just look too 40k. Up to you though.

Just to add, I wouldn't pick bones with someone using the 40k era packs on 30k models, I just wouldn't think it looked right. With the expense of the other jump packs, it's certainly fair enough, especially if used with MKVI, as others mention.

I'd be very conservative and generally only issue the 'current' patterns of jump packs to contemporary suits of mk. VI and VII plate*, thus corresponding to the late Battle for Sol.  You might be able to use them in singular with a bit of correction as the 'lathe' pattern and some other prototype patterns, of course, but the mk. V heavy lift (Serpha V) and mk. IV (Sol-Harrier) pattern are probably better for standard line squads in the early to mid war periods among the loyalists. Definitely not a 'no' but it's one of the few things which are immediately noticeable on models from a distance (where even armour patterns can easily blend).

*Just my perspective at least, I included a large number of the mk. VI-VII pattern jump jets on my Blood Angel Assault Squads, but they're all in mk. VI armour along with seekers, while the few mk. IV still uses the Sol-Harriers.  I feel self justified in that they're modeled after a unit destroyed late in the battle of Terra and this is a snapshot of the late war unit using lighter vehicles and 'newer' equipment.

Man I kinda want to make a legion out of Primaris tacticals just to :cuss with Those People now.

"You can't have those!"

"My marines ate their vegetables. Cry some more Spergy."

Obviously I'd run them as normal non Primaris marines equipped with normal marine gear.

I think the biggest issue is that the 40k packs are easier to acquire in mass and in plastic.

I'd do it and say ":cuss em" if they got pissy about it. Then again, I'm a misanthrope, so maybe just doll them up real good and be polite about it.

The discussions are more about the optics and not about the fluff. ;)

I use them on Mk4 and higher, and use other third party packs for the rest. That said if your willing to ChinaCast the sky is the limit.

End of the day, if your rocking heresy everything and someone looses their :cuss over some jump packs that are neither confirmed nor denied to have existed, :cuss em.

I think of 40k jump packs as going with Mk VI armor and newer. You could make a case for Mk V since that armor is supposed to be a mishmash of parts, but the bulky jump packs FW uses on its Mk V assault marines seem to fit the armor’s style better. In any case, I personally wouldn’t use them on any current Heresy-era plastic kit.

Not saying it’s a big deal, just not lore-accurate as you asked.

It’s frustrating that FW doesn’t make its various jump packs easier to buy. I’d probably go 3rd party.
