So finally truly starting my long over due guard army here is the start and basic color ideas.

Hey Fellas So i am back haha. I am working on a full Guard army, not scions but actual guard.  My cousin has orks and we have a game cming up at thanksgiving.  I hate to be that guy but i have ZERO idea how to even start a list with guard. so much going on. Is there a rule of thumb as to what to kind of base things around? I just need to know what to start buying haha. Thanks in advance!!

Good to see your WIP topic get started :tu: For getting started you want troopers as they're the bread and butter of almost every list. What's the limit on your first game? That dictates your number of models but as a safe start 2 Company Commanders and 3 Infantry Squads to fill out a Battalion is a good idea :)

Do you have any idea how you might like to play your Guard? That would influence the weapon options you take for them. Generally I keep squads cheap with just a special weapon, but there's many ways to skin a xeno ;)

You're off to a great start with your models, nice kit bashing and colours do you know what the rest of your colour scheme will be?

First Game should be 1500-2000. I have about 40-50 guard. 10 vets. 3x HB 3X Mortars and 3X ML.  Also have a command squad and two sentinels.  Ive always always loved Basiliks and Hellhounds. I think i would like to stay away from leman Russ tanks, just not my thing.

The colors will more or less be the same for the rest of the army. Vehicles will be based the bone color, masked off then the grey sprayed over it.

Sounds like an artillery list to me ;) Bassies are nice, and Hellhounds are excellent - I'd say they're more so for you as you'll need something to "replace" the durability of Russes. Some Hellhounds to keep the enemy back (and roast them) will do well :) You have a good number of troopers so they should be ok for 1500pts, though you may want to consider more for 2k but give it some goes first and see how you feel :tu:

Keep the pictures of progress coming :D

Nice to see you over in the guard forum as well! If your World Eaters are any indication, I'm sure your guardsmen will look top notch when finished.

I agree with WarriorFish, troopers are certainly the bread and butter and you can't go wrong buying more. I have 80 at the moment. I tend to run different variants of Leman Russ tanks in support, mostly armed with the battle cannon, because they are pretty durable and dish out a lot of damage, but if that is not your thing there are several other ways to play guard. Personally, I want to try out an all infantry list, so I'm gradually buying more troops. *grumble stupid expensive Death Korps grumble*

Artillery is great, especially with enough screens to keep them shooting for a few turns. Mortars are always a solid choice too! I tend to avoid the other options for HWS just because if points. Plasma guns in your infantry squads are another excellent way to add a bit of punch to your front lines.

Hellhounds always get targeted down by my opponents very quickly, so I tend to rush them forward as a quick moving threat. If they are overlooked for other threats though they burn up infantry so very nicely!!

The Sgt bolter is something I never bothered with, because there is a sparsity of Guard-sized bolters, and every conversion I've ever seen with a Marine rifle simply looked stupid.

I did buy a big stack of those holstered hotshot lasguns that I am considering gluing or magnetizing to my Sgts to represent either a bolter or a hotshot lasgun when playing Krieg.

I have a ton of unused Scion bits i can pull from for now. So i only play about twice a year with my cousin he is running orks, Im trying to decide if i should put in lascannons in my vets at all. I know vets aren't ideal but I love the bits im using haha.
