Death Watch/Grey Knight army info gathering

Greetings All,

I'm seeking advice on a possible army I'm looking at building. After completing my DG army and now looking at DW/GK list and would like to find out if people have used these 2 army's together and how well they go.

The main reason I do this is I love the DW and enjoy reading there fluff and novels plus GK interest me too and had the brain wave to use both in a 2000pt list.

I know this limits the amount of unit 1 army can take but can't decide on which one I'd take over the other. If it came down to it, I'd go DW but would like to try both for the time being.

So hwlp/info would be fantastic.

Cheers

I’d suggest waiting for the chapter approved to be released in december. Things may change for the better.

As it stands, Grey Knights are limited to which units are most viable.

It’s also not advised to take both death watch and grey knights together as they’re both elite and expensive armies.

It’s a shame though, I’m desperate to use my grey knight terminators alongside my death watch kill teams. But there’s just not enough room in a 2K list to make it playable.

Again, hopefully the next chapter approved will change things

Honestly? GK are in kind of bad spot right now so the best use for their models (unless you're willing to optimize every single model in both armies) is to run them as DW units* (as they can take a lot of the same gear), but even then the list would be merely 'competitive', with quite a few units being overpriced. They just overlap a lot and building an army would require lots of planning from the start.

*in fact if you want to build infantry unit with all storm bolters or terminators with power weapons instead of fists out of the box, GK box probably is cheapest and simplest way you can do that. All you need is some DW pads and helmets plus a few melee weapons GK don't get and you're good to go. Armour aesthetic is similar enough to be good with a few simple conversions and different paint job...

If you really really wanted to put some GKs into your army and stay competitive I'd just take a small patrol detachment of whats decent in the GK book. Like a small terminator squad of Draigo and some Paladins. Or a Supreme Detachment of just Grandmaster Dreadknights. Its still not great but it might be your best bet if you really wanted to have some GKs in your list.

Chapter Approved 2018 might give you some more options here, but it is unclear how effective any changes will be.

I also want to add in some GK action onto my DW, but will be waiting to see how they fare after the changes.

I was thinking grey knights but custodes intrigue me more rn. I do hope they have some changes to them. They were my first army coming to 4ok. Problem ive come acroos i like elite armies more, which limits my options in list building

The best synergy between the two would likely be to use Deathwatch troops with termies and storm shield vets to screen for grey knight characters, and the grey knights to deny smites that can nuke our elite DW troops.
Not sure its better than using SW rune priests, but it has its advantages.  grey knight smites can get pretty crazy, and Draigo is a beast.

If you're looking for more advantage in a GK detachment, try throwing in a double-gun dreadnought with the ignore-LoS psychic power.  Even a single grandmaster dreadknight can be a potent threat that is incredibly hard to kill.

Remeber DW libbies can throw Might of Heroes on GK characters.

I concur. I hope to see GK make a comeback.

I love Grey Knights and have played them in every edition from their full inception on, but they are in a really tough spot. Deathwatch is not in a great spot so combining the two would be mostly a conceptual exercise.

I put my GK away about 3 months ago and got more serious about Custodes as a result. (much better experience for obvious reasons).

That said I do love GK. Love the background, and I'm still fine with the models, but I always feel like both armies have an extremely similar challenge in the category of model count.

That being said with CA around the corner this could be a much easier combination as  a result!

Agreed, but I'd highly recommend immense skepticism of the current rumour train.  Don't base any long-term plans on the tidbits coming out of the various 40k pundits; wait until you have the book in your hands to go ahead with plans!

What? I just bought 4 Repulsors!

I kid, I kid.. :D

Discussed this with a friend of mine who is an incredible GK player(still wins at events with them).

Might be worth trying a battalion with 2 shield vanguards and 3 bikes on the DW side, split off from 5 storm bolter/chain sword dudes.  For the GK's, grandmaster knights. It's got speed and firepower, which can let you concentrate your forces quickly.  It's an interesting combination.

Im still trying to fit this in a list and even in a pure 2k DW list im still not capable (part of this is because i have the 5 man intercessor, 3 aggressor 2 inceptor t5 hulk squad which is 306 points ) but eh i will continue to try

Every list starts with restrictions, whether limiting codexes to draw from, or deciding to include a certain unit.  Just have to firmly set your limits, then look for things to complement your chosen unit/s or synergise within your restricitions.

DW has strong elite troop choices, strong character options(a general Astartes thing).  We can do some weird :cuss like the bike combat squads, but weird :cuss has to built around.  I think a DW list built around bike combat squads would look very different from other DW lists.

Building a list to synergize between our two strengths(characters and troops) leaves you with rock hard stormbolter squads for 3++/2+ shenanigans and tons of SIA dakka, or 20 wound T5 intergressor squads, covering for smash captains and a watchmaster.  This leaves you vulnerable to mortal wounds, which jump libbies help defend against, while also helping cut through tanks.

Short version:  I suspect bike combat squads and intergressor squads are gonna be rough to fit together.  Theyre both too many points to get multiples of, and also take good hq's and support options.

i highly agree, and what i learned later on... IMO DW needs to stick to characters and troops, everything else is ok. Dreadnoughts are fine but are limited but benefit from Tactics and Deep Strike, no real room for chaplains in the mix cause we are glass cannons and other allies just do it better (insert Blood Angels / Space Wolves / and what Im looking into are custodes) I wanted to add GK due to the nostalgia of them being my starting army, but to me they are us with psychic abilities really aimed towards just Chaos. I dont know much of my meta around here (havent gotten too many games in yet) but hell building a list last night a battalion with Watch master / Libby / Primaris Tank Squad (see above) and 2 vets with 2 Razobacks with Lascannons touched 1k easily. I do agree in a sense if you want them build around them. They seem fun, fast, and throw people off but just cant find the right place for them as Im running DW as a mid field ally detachment.

I deeply regret money wise , but I had fun building them : Terminator Captain with Combi Melta / Power Fist Melta (used the primaris chaplain as the base & the DW terminators ( they were a fluff piece and i was still testing out my building skills, but good lord overall the cost was about 70 bucks for those bits.

But not to run off, back on topic. I feel like you could run DW with GK, but they run so similar to me, minus the psychic and stratagems that I dont fully believe it is worth it. Fun wise maybe but think you are in for a long battle each time. But hell what do i know. :)
