Anime/Manga/Comic style Kill Team Project

Looks like you need to use a lot more grey/white for this effect. If you look closely, the Orks only really have black where they have deep shadows. Also mixing colours in doesn't really work with that style unless you use it VERY sparsely and only to highlight those areas to an extreme since the eye will be always drawn to those coloured areas with that style.

The middle Deathwatch guy's leg looks like the right effect, the rest of them aren't there yet.

The OP is going for a completely different effect to those orks, the orks have a live action black and white look while the OP is trying to mimic limited colour pallette 2d art.

In black and white films you don't see much black, in comic books black tends to be black even if it has blue or red as the highlight colour.

Maybe, but then again black&white isn't a particularly popular style for comic books. Unlike manga they are usually colorized. I know there are black&white comics but those are usually pretty old (and even then comics were usually colorized).

However doesn't change the fact that the Orks capture the desired effect way better and OP not being quite there yet.

One set of models can't capture a desired effect better if they're desiring different effects. The colour on the DW shoulder pads and bolt guns make it clear that they aren't meant to be black and white. DW just happen to be mostly black models.

That's not what I said and frankly I don't feel like arguing with you about it here since it seems it'll turn out pretty spammy.

I think the question to ask is whether it's intended to be manga style (greyscale) or anime (color). Also, what is the 2D artist that is being emulated? Perhaps you can include examples of that artwork for reference. Different artists have different styles and require different techniques on the 3D models, and an example would also set levels of expectation for viewers.

I'm not sure if this is the correct one, but here is an article on a 3D Gundam model converted and painted to look 2D. By "conversion" I mean the application of putty to conceal 3D model part lines that don't exist in the 2D art. Of significant note is the use of color in that model. The Ork post above is a red herring and may create some confusion as to the OP's intent with his Deathwatch models, which clearly aren't intended to be black and white). In fact, I've put the Ork models in "hidden" tags to (hopefully) prevent further confusion.

Something else to consider with this approach to painting is that some artistic styles only work well when models are viewed from a certain angle. I don't know that this is necessarily the case with this Deathwatch kill team, but it's something to keep in mind (both for the artist and for viewers). The Gundam model works well at any angle in a variety of poses because the artistic style that is emulated allows that to work. Certain styles of Deathwatch illustration, meanwhile, might not allow multi-angle viewing to work well, largely depending on shadows and reflection (a notorious problem that also applies to NMM techniques).

It's always very cool to see hobbyists using alternate (i.e., non-'Eavy Metal) techniques to create models that look distinctive on the tabletop.

I’m surprised at the quick responses I have been getting. Still a work in progress and still watching a lot of fantasy anime to see how black armor is done. I intend to do some comic style hatch work to break up some of the colors and make it less shiny. I was inspired by watching various anime and thought I can try to do that on a 3D model that isn’t a Gundam.

I did a few test runs on flat pieces of scrap to try and simulate it, but on a 3D figure it’s been time consuming because I do want it to look like a 2D paint job at any angle. As for that gundam, it did pop up when I was doing my research. TBH, making this attempt has in my opinion helped me get better at painting faces.

The paint job displayed that gundam would work better on Tau because there are flatter areas and stiffer angles. Thanks for the input and I’ll keep this thread up todate as I continue to finish. I really appreciate the feedback that I have gotten so far and will continue to appreciate it as painting for Kill Team has reignited my love for painting.

On a side note my New England Patriots theme Kill Team I painted for my fiancé had gotten more hate or lack of feedback other than the patriots suck than anything I have ever posted in any forum. Lawl. Thanks for reading and keep an eye out for the next post from me on the status of this Kill Team.

Okay, as a Rhode Island-native I'll bite:

I decided to add more to this motley crew. I figured I can round out my Command Roster for just in  case purposes.

From Left to right the Deathwatch Astartes are Ultramarines, White Scars, Dark Angels, and Iron Hands. Going to put together 2 Black Shields to cover the missing legions.

When I read Anime, I thought you'd give them huge eyes and wild haircuts . But the models are great, even though I don't fully 'get' the effect.

:laugh.: 'd at this.

I do like the effect you're going for, Hiroitchi! It's an interesting painting experiment, and looking forward to more output in this style.
