Panzer
Drop Pods are still overcosted and aside of Sternguards there aren't really units that would want one in the Codex unfortunately. It's a liiiittle bit better than before C18 but overall it didn't really change that it's too expensive for what it does, especially compared with Jump Packs. Race Bannon
In a competitive setting, I agree that DP are overcosted. Otherwise, DOOO EEET! Captain Idaho
Company Veterans scream Drop Pod too, when given 5 Plasma guns. *** On that note - plasma pistols have gone down to a very affordable price. Hard to go against them now eh. Jacques Corbin
Well, I mentioned the Drop Pod, because you can squeeze an Apothecary in there with them, to mitigate losses to a degree, as Apothecaries cannot take Jump Packs, nor Terminator Armor. I don't know, lately I have had the idea of Storm Shield and Plasma Pistol marines doing an aggressive sweep and clear, stuck in my head. Captain Idaho
Using Breacher Shields and Plasma guns you could make a cool looking squad too ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351272-so-what-in-the-codex-is-actually-good/page/6/#findComment-5218701 Share on other sites
Firepower
Using Breacher Shields and Plasma guns you could make a cool looking squad too ;) *smiles with rarely justified smugness beside the Sword Brethren formation's buffed veterans* Really, Storm Bolters get the job done for a pod squad with Shields. They're more or less bound to get charged or blasted after a turn without blowing themselves up. Captain Idaho
I dunno. If I'm paying for a Drop Pod, a squad of dudes inside with Storm Bolters and Storm Shields, I'd rather just pay extra for Cataphractii Terminators. Which are quite reasonable now. I can get 5 with 3x power fists and 2 Chain Fists and the Grenade Harness for 189pts. That's very nice for the points to start attacking objectives, which if players ARE using the latest Chapter Approved missions, will be more important. Firepower
Fair enough. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351272-so-what-in-the-codex-is-actually-good/page/6/#findComment-5218767 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Don't get me wrong; 155pts for the Drop Pod and Company Veterans squad with Storm Shields and Storm Bolters isn't terrible. I just feel putting those points into Terminator might be more rewarding ;) Take away the Drop Pod though and 90pts for the unit is pretty cool. Still prefer Sternguard though. Jacques Corbin
Ok, good point. Turn 2+, you Deep Strike Cataphracti Terminators onto any unclaimed midfield objectives. They will be hard to shift, indeed. I still see 2+/4++ failing to volume of fire, from say Tau or Necrons. Also, do they have the staying power to weather an assault from Tyranid bugs, Ork Boyz, Chaos Cultists, all of which are troops, which will take the objective by default? Do Cataphracti have the damage output to shift dedicated objective campers off of an objective? Kallas
C:SM Terminators, probably not. Now, Wolf Guard/Deathwatch Terminators, however...now they seem pretty awesome as they can really trim down their costs while scattering in Storm Shields (especially for TDAWG, who have full wargear malleability unlike Deathwatch). 5 TDAWG with Storm Shields and Storm Bolters is only 135pts, which is pretty damn good for 10 2+/3++ wounds, 11 2+3+ 4/0/1 attacks in melee, and 20 3+ 4/0/1 shots; resilient vs both small arms and big guns, able to clear chaff pretty well, and you can swap out some Storm Shields for more effective melee weaponry as desired (eg, a few of them with Power Swords/Axes/Mauls for some additional punch vs Sv4+/5+ units). Codex Terminators are a bit in the lurch with their fixed wargear, unfortunately. Captain Idaho
I'd use Terminators later in the game and make a hole for them if need be. Objective holders are just likely to be single squads so a Terminator squad can make a mess of them, especially if they charge after shooting. And saturation is key - get more stuff on the table folk don't want to ignore. I hear Vanguard are nice this time of year. Race Bannon
I still see 2+/4++ failing to volume of fire, from say Tau or Necrons. To be fair, this is true for anything. Captain Idaho
That's why I always go on about Target saturation. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351272-so-what-in-the-codex-is-actually-good/page/6/#findComment-5219125 Share on other sites
Panzer
To be also fair 2+ armour is still very durable to volumes of fire as long as it's only AP0. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351272-so-what-in-the-codex-is-actually-good/page/6/#findComment-5219127 Share on other sites
