So what rules, FAQ and errata do I actually need to play?

Hello everyone,

So, bear with me, I'm very new to the forum and this edition of 40K (I used to play a long time ago).

My question is pretty simple really - what exactly do I need to play?

For clarity I have my

40K Rulebook

Chosen Codex

I went to GWs FAQ & Errata section and was like 'woah! there is a lot in here...' such as Big FAQ 1 & 2, Chapter Approved 2017, various codex FAQs, documents from 2017 such as designers commentary and stepping into a new edition of 40K...

Which of these are relevant, which are not? Which do I need to print?

Sorry I'm sure you must get this all the time but I am a little confused as to what I need to have printed and ready etc.

Books you need are:

Rulebook

Your Codex (it will have to be the 8th edition codex)

Chapter Approved is something you will probably need at some point too. Other than some point changes and narrative rules, CA 2017 isn't super necessary. Unless you're attending a tournament within the next month and need the most updated points, you can easily just wait until CA 2018 comes out in December.

For FAQs/Errata:

You will need to make sure you at least look through the main rulebook, your codex, chapter approved, Big FAQ 1, and Big FAQ 2. The Designer's Commentary and Stepping into a new edition may be useful if you're coming in from an old edition, but you definitely don't need to print them out.

I would print out the Codex (just yours) and Main Rulebook FAQs. Big FAQ 2 would be helpful, or at least portions of it. Maybe portions of Big FAQ 1.

If you are returning and using old models then the relavant index and its FAQ might be useful but not essential ( due to only models and load outs currently being sold in the current codexs so for legacy models you have to still use the index entries).

For example for me to use all my 5th Ed eldar I have :

Rulebook, faq, big faq 1 & 2

Craftworld codex, faq

Xenos index and FAQ

The absolute minimum would be covered with Rulebook and Codex of choice.

However of course you'd want to play with updated rules and point costs so you'd also want the Chapter Approved (just wait about 3 weeks more until GW releases the new one) and the Erratas/FAQs (which you can download here).

Among Erratas/FAQs you'd need the one for your Codex, the one for the Rulebook and the latest BIG FAQ. Also the one for the Chapter Approved if you bought it of course.

So to sum it up.

Absolute minimum: Rulebook + Codex of choice

Ideal: Rulebook + Codex of choice + latest Chapter Approved + Errata/FAQs (Rulebook + Codex + Chapter Approved + BIG FAQ).

You can pretty much void the need of the Chapter Approved 2017 by using the Battlescribe App tho. The point costs are usually correct a few weeks after the release so you can rely on it.

I find it much easier to pull up the errata and FAQ on a laptop, then go through the rulebook and codex with a pencil and make all the changes straight into the books. You could borrow Chapter Approved and do the same thing with the points values. It brings you straight back down to just the two books.

Thank you, very insightful.

I'm not returning using old models - I'm going all new, and all gold. Handy to know though, thanks.

I've been playing this game since 3rd edition and I have to ask myself this question all the time.  Every time we get ready for a group game I'm printing off multiple PDFs and putting them in manila folders.

I'm glad I'm not the only one asking that question of myself - you're not alone brother!

Again really helpful, I've been using Battlescribe to work out what my barebones list was going to be. Looks like I made a safe choice in that app!

I was thinking of doing something similar, but perhaps consolidating all the loose paper into a file of sorts, then going through the main rulebook and the codex and actually marking the entries with coloured sticky dots or something similar so that when I read the entry I know there is an amendment somewhere... I definitely don't like the idea of loose paper stuffed in the back of a codex. Hmmm... will need to think on this.

None tournament wise......So long as you have the base game rules then I’d just print out your BattleScribe list as that gives you the rules you need for your list ..... it’s what most of the club I go to do... we leave the rule books at home and just have the print outs

I don't think that will fly at GW tournaments.

^ please don't do that. People who don't have their Codex at hand on tournaments are horrible.

Erm.... I did say none tournament wise*... as in dont do this at tournaments!

*ok I put none instead of non but I feel the meaning is still clear... obviously not :sad.:

It sounded like you're saying that one would need none on tournaments. Wording it something like "Outside of tournaments ..." or "In friendly games ..." would be much clearer. ;)
