I’m trying to play more games now and thinking more of strategies or tactics to develop, I know there is a difference between strategy and tactics, but I don’t know where this would sit yet so I’ll use both terms

I am reading Ferrus Manus and the intro where Amadeus DuCain is performing the strategy/tactic of “Raising the Storm” and it has me interested on actually being able to do it in the game. But what does the actual strategy involve? It’s stated that it used on the planet of Rust, iirc that was where the imperial army were used as bait and when the Orks had fully committed did the Iron Hands strike.

To me that would seem like bait, hold/escalate and strike phases/turns on the tabletop.

Turn 1

Bait: try and draw in as many enemy possible. Must be durable units

Turn 2

Hold/Escalate: hold on or escalate to ensure maximum commitment.

Turn 3

Strike: deep strike, drop pod, assault

These are just thoughts, correct me if I’m wrong, I would like to hear other opinions and ideas on the subject.

In 30k. I know Shadrak Meduson has a warlord trait that allows him to make his force really killy in close combat called Raise the Storm, giving all friendly Iron Hands, Raven Guard, and Salamanders Furious Charge, Hatred (Everything), and Crusader. The guys behind 30k 8e instead made it +1 to charge rolls, +1 attack, and reroll 1s to hit during the fight phase.

I’m not up to date with the FAQ or chapter approved, or played many 8th. This was going to be a general outline of the plan

Bait: Librarian, lieutenant, apothecary, honour guard and company veterans squad in a rhino, jet pack Lt in cover.

Librarian uses “Might of Heroes”

“Machine Empathy” stratagem

Hold/Escalate: 2 x 5 man squads in Rhino in support

ThunderFire Cannon (in cover) to take out major threats

5 man sniper Scout squad in support of TFC

“Only in Death Does Duty End” stratagem

Strike: Jet packed Captain, vanguard vets and 2 x 5 man and 1 7 man assault squads strike from reserve

“Honour the Chapter” stratagem

Captain has merciless logic and shield eternal

Librarian uses “Veil of Time” or “Psychic Fortress”

“Orbital Bombardment” stratagem

1750 pts Battalion Detachment

1025 pts deployed

725 pts reserve

Yeah, Chapter Approved 2017 adjusts some of those points values in your list.

The Sternguard are a good call. They go great with the Auspex Scan stratagem. I even modelled my sergeant reading an auspex.

Add an Ironclad Dreadnought instead of one of the Assault Squads. At T8 and 8 wounds, he is hardly enough to start on the table top. I say Chainfist, Heavy Flamer, Hurricane Bolters, and Assault Launchers. That will mash up any infantry, and still be able to punch a Landraider to smithereens.

Well, in a vacuum, agreed, but add a Chaplain or a Captain nearby, and rerolling 1s to hit in melee becomes redundant. I mostly suggested that build to save some points.

So if he takes the CCW, what weapon should he take with it? Storm Bolter or Heavy Flamer? I do like 2 Heavy Flamers.

Cheers for the feedback, An Ironclad is on my Wishlist, he’ll go well with double flamers. I forgot about claiming objectives, rhino 1 will claim an early objective to draw a fight and the 7 man assault squad with a flamer might camp on 1 that is away from the fighting in round 3. 2 more Questions: who gives better buffs to jetpacked assault squads, armed with plasma pistols and evisorators, a jetpacked Captain, Chaplain or Lt? And are ven dreads still worth it?

Ordinarily I would say Chaplain, he has a better reroll for close combat units but if you're taking plasma pistols then the Captain is the better bet so you can sweat less when overcharging the pistols.

Ven Dreads are totally worth it for the skill upgrades alone. Stick one in the back with your base of fire units and you don't need Captain support, you can use the Wisdom of the Ancients stratagem.
