Stupid Question: Relic on Exalted Court Character

Is this legal or am I missing something? Battlescribe thinks it isn't but I don't see anything in the codex speaking against doing the following:

1) Super Heavy Detachment with a Questoris/Dominus Knight and at least one other Knight.

2) Make the other knight your Warlord - so he can pick a warlord train and one IMPERIAL KNIGHTS CHARACTER can pick a relic.

3) Use Exalted Court to give the Questoris/Dominus Knight the CHARACTER keyword (and a warlord trait).

4) Now the Exalted Court character can take the relic unlocked by the Warlord since he has all the right keywords.

So you could do this for example:

+++ New Roster (Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition) [80 PL, 1574pts] +++

++ Super-Heavy Detachment +3CP (Imperium - Imperial Knights) ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

Exalted Court: Exalted Court: 1 Extra Warlord Trait (-1CP)

+ Lord of War +

Acastus Knight Porphyrion: Character (Knight Lance), Ironstorm Missile Pod, 2x Lascannon, 2x Twin Magna Lascannon, Warlord, Warlord Trait: Ion Bulwark

Knight Gallant: Character (Exalted Court), Heavy Stubber, Heirloom: Sanctuary, Reaper Chainsword, Thunderstrike gauntlet, Warlord Trait: Landstrider

Knight Gallant: Heavy Stubber, Reaper Chainsword, Thunderstrike gauntlet

Correct?
Before anyone asks why you would do this: For some of the Forge World Knights there aren't really any interesting relics to take, but they can really use a Warlord Trait.

On a related topic: Has anyone here used a Porphyrion in a serious battle? How did it perform? How would you run it?

Technically you are correct, however the way battlescribe is authenticating it's wrong.

In battlescribe make the Porphyrion a character via exalated court and the gallent with the trait and heirloom the 'warlord' that will fix the authentication issue.

Edit: So played with BS a bit and exalted court isn't targeting any of the Cerastus knights, the Acastus or the armigars, only the questrious FW knights and other medium knights.... anyone have the wording on the exalted court strat and if it says it can only target Questoris/Dominus that might be the issue via battlescribe.

But as stated you are correct in your relic placement.

There was a list that contained a Porphyrion at the Bay Area Open (maybe? could have been NOVA) recently as I recall. I believe that list was in the top 10 or so at the event, which given it's one of the biggest on the calendar, may or may not tell us... anything really :tongue.:

I'm sure it'd be trivial to find details on the matches it featured in and how it got on though. Will have a look...

Exalted court requires the QUESTORIS CLASS or DOMINUS CLASS keyword. So the only way to get a Warlord Trait on an Armiger, Cerastus or Acastus knight is making it your warlord.

Especially the Porphyrion would really appreciate Ion Bulwark :biggrin.:

1. Yes, but some tournaments might have some variance on this. It all depends on the order you do the pregame stuff in. Normally, if something happens in a certain phase of the game, it is entirely up to the player how you want to play it out, but some tournaments have a set order of doing things.

2. Yeah, I use a Porphyrion quite often. Brought him to a tournament a few weeks ago. All in all he is ok, but not fantastic. Looks great though. Here's an old thread where we discussed him.

Normal operation as I've always played it is you select your free warlord trait and relic essentially at the list building stage. The stratagem is a pre game stratagem so you can't use it to help get someone a relic or such with knights.

In a friendly game I wouldn't care but in a competitive setting it comes down to the format.

The codex actually states when the the free relic is assigned: "If your army is led by an IMPERIAL KNIGHTS Warlord, then before the battle you may give one..."

The Exalted Court strategem also happens "before the battle". Whether "before the battle" refers to the list building phase, or a separate phase that takes part after list building isn't entirely clear (at least for me) but it shouldn't matter for the question at hand. Assigning relics, using before the battle strategems (and I assume picking Warlord traits) happen at the same, so order of operation shouldn't be an issue.

This is why format matters. Most tournament formats should specifically mention this. The ITC format makes the warlord trait and relic part of list building so that wouldn't be possible, and locally we are more familiar with the ITC format and tend to use it as the default.

As for the core rules it's true there isn't a clear order of operations since before the battle is before the battle, but should one happen before the other? Unless they mention it in an FAQ it shouldn't matter. Unless it becomes really obnoxious it shouldn't matter.

That was me, if you mean the BAO. I didn't play top ten though, so perhaps you are thinking NOVA. The porphyrion just struggles a bit and I refuse to field a loyal 32.

On topic though, it is actually illegal IN BATTLESCRIBE because battlescribe is just the list building stage. At that stage the Exalted Court strategem doesn't exist yet. They only built the option into the program for friendly games so that people can list hammer it out ahead of time, imo. Honestly, just don't assign any relics until your game. I found that I mix them up more often than I th ink I will so its nice to be freed from what my list says.
