Tales from Vigilus

In probably the same deal as Malign Portents for AoS, WC started to publish short stories for Vigilus:

If it's really the same deal, be prepared for two months of assassins, IG, Deathwatch, Space Marines, Inquisition and SoB all jobbing in hilarious incompetent ways to play up how big the threat is only to defeat it in last possible second with Deus Ex Machina barely hinted at in penultimate story

I especially like how in this one, the exitus bullet is even larger than in cleary distorted heroic scale, twice as thick as real, actual sabot tank rounds (and in any way, even comparison to a bolter would be exaggeration, never mind actual tank gun), and yet despite that fails to penetrate unarmored human cleanly, how the sniper doesn't bother with double tap despite elephant sized target pretty much requiring it, and the patriarch uses what is clearly a contrived game mechanic to survive (come on, cultist jumped 3+ meters up to block a headshot? faster than supersonic bullet?) :whistling:

Alien gene magic! Plus vindicares are "one shot, one kill" kinda schooled

I mean, it did kill something. Just not the intended target.

Still technically one shot one kill ;)

The email I got from GW saying the story was on the site, said it's a story every day this week. Not sure if they'll continue past that.

So I guess it's leading up to reveal Sunday and pre-orders next week maybe?

I feel like you are too negative about the Malign Portents stories. I enjoyed them a lot and felt the whole campaign was worlds better done than what we got for Fate of Konor and Gathering Storm.

I wonder if this short story contain some elements at what may coming for Genestealer Cults Lore and rules.

He ran hard for the corridor beyond, only to see the shape of something terrible rise up from the shadows. It was huge, far bigger than a Purestrain specimen – and it was unharmed. Its massive form seemed to expand as it spread its four arms and extruded a long, bulbous cranium. One of its limbs backhanded his pistol from his grip. Another shot out, grabbing him around the throat.

A second Patriarch.‘No…’ choked out Klotec. ‘Not… possible…’

---------------------------------------------

As far as i know, Genestealers Cults normally have only one Patriarch, an evolution of one of the original Genestealers that started the Cult. So a cult possessing a second Patriarch would likely be quite a change in the Lore. It may also be a Broodlord rather than a Patriarch, a combat-oriented version of the Patriarch.

The Malign Portents fluff and stories were decent and some were even good.

The problem is that the fluff GW writes for 40K is generally terrible and incredibly predictable and repetitious. The vindicare story sounds like it was lifted almost exactly from the Montka and Kauyon campaigns in 7th Ed. In that one a Vindicare draws a bead on Farsight and shoots, only for a Crisis Suit bodyguard to block the shot after it had been fired. Then the Vindicare dies. Shaddowsun gets within touching distance of a Callidus assassin but dodges a melee attack too quickly for the assassin to keep up with.

I'm glad none of my Imperial armies are directly listed as being on Vigilis because if the book is anything like Montka or Kauyon then they are going to look like inept fools while their foes magically anticipate their every move. GW doesn't really understand how to balance a fight so both sides look dangerous and effective in their own right.

What made me chuckle is just why a sniper was so close to his target in the first place. Then added to the above points makes the tale like bad genestealer fan-fic. I mean, the vindicare had time to process all that information about the 2nd patriarch yet not the speed to snapfire his pistol?

Are we sure it's a vindicare and not just a guardsman in disguise?

Some of them were good, yes, if you're fan of the 'evil' factions. Literally every single one focused on Order protagonists had them job, be suddenly incompetent, or evil low level lackeys be some sort of super-villains compared to them that the whole thing seriously strained suspension of disbelief on how the Order states didn't collapse eons ago if every single opponent wins that easily with their best, most elite forces. Can you imagine a decayed chaos animated zombie biting and punching through Terminator armour with ease? That's literally the ending of one MP story.

Then we have one of the first MP stories, about equivalent of 40K titan that won countless victories over the forces of Chaos, titan with crew of dedicated sanctioned psykers to ward against evil spells... A titan that then instantly rusted (yes, the story tries to imply it took longer but everyone inside had to be blind to not notice decay and destruction of every single mechanism around them on the time scale indicated) and its crew was aged to the point of death because low ranking minion of lesser god sneezed on it or something. And it wasn't even the worst story in that regard...

I wonder if this short story contain some elements at what may coming for Genestealer Cults Lore and rules.

Isn't the cult named after the Pauper PRINCES - so more than one!?

Either there were two Cultists who started the Cult, equal in power/relevance!? Maybe brothers?

Or BIG, well-developed Cults, that need to hold out longer, due to being far away from the Tyranid Swarms develop more than one Patriarch as a fail safe!?

Or a Matriarch!?

(Wonder how this will translate into some rules for GSC regarding a duo of patriarchs)

Also regarding DG:

What brings a Task Force to Vigilus, that demands them to arrive so "stealthy"!?

Or is this the story hook on how/why Marneus and the Ultramarines rush to Vigilus right after the Plague Wars!?

We will see...

The Order states did collapse eons ago or are all brand new. That's kind of the point of Age of not the great crusade honest Sigmar.

First founding chapters are always busy, busy, rushing here and there. Hopefully they'll take advantage of the no longer stuffed timeline and put an actual gap in between the various campaign settings.

Is there more to the stories if you download them? Or are they being posted in their entirety?

So far, I guess they're fine, if rather predictable. In the first one, the assassin's cockiness made me think he was going to fail, and while I certainly wasn't expecting a second Patriarch, I was expecting a reveal of something or other right before the assassin's inevitable demise. Also, it didn't seem like he had much of an escape plan. Even if he'd killed his target, it doesn't seem like he'd have been able to make it out. Suicide missions come with the job, but it didn't seem like he considered this to be one.

Mostly I'm curious about the barely mentioned other five operatives and the Vanus temple.

As for the second story, because of the title and some of the choice of words at the beginning, I spent literally the whole story waiting to see if it was Death Guard. "Lamentabus Mogue" is a fantastic name, but his handwringing "Oh the humanity!" interjections were pointless and annoying; it's hard to imagine an Inquisitor putting up with it.

I feel like I've read several bits of lore now where Death Guard use poxwalkers to infiltrate somewhere undetected. I assume the Death Guard codex mentions incidents in which there were poxwalkers without plaguemarines, but if in every story and game poxwalkers are always accompanied by Death Guard, it doesn't seem like much of a reveal or much of an infiltration strategy.

But we have Valhallans on Vigilus! Because literally everyone is on Vigilus. I imagine they are uncomfortably warm.

Is this the first mention of the Vanus temple in the current timeline? I haven't read as much BL stuff as some of you, but I've only come accross infocytes in the Heresy and (if I recall) the Beast war.

Malign Portents was used to expand the lore and introduce new things, so I'd be surprised if the same thing doesn't happen here. (obviously it already did with the "two patriarchs" thing, but that could be unique to Vigilus)

As for the stories themselves, I'm not particularly sold on the first one, but I like the second. Nothing major to it, it's a pretty by the numbers Death Guard raid (sneaking into the underbelly of an Imperial world and dumping zombies by the boxload are things we see in the codex) but that's fine, and I'm a sucker for the "found footage" style. Happy with his one.

Nah, they had a section in the Assassins supplement back in 6th. It presented the theory that the malfunctioning missiles that destroyed the Crimson Fists' fortress monastery was actually Vanus Temple sabotage.

More likely a Brood lord, or Lictor, suggesting that Nids are already active on the planet.
