Necron Horde

Are you thinking for a competitive game, or a casual one? For casuals, it could be fine. I have used 60 warriors before. Never more than that. I went second and one full unit was killed before I could go, then I lost another on turn 2. Warriors are very easy to kill en masse and you can't bring as many as you should because they cost so much. Some armies struggle to put out enough shots but I find it is very easy for most opponents to kill a full 20 man unit in a single turn.

A bit of fun mostly, but Semi competitive.

Dynasty:

SAUTEKH

HQ:

Orikan the Diviner

Lord

Overlord

Troops:

3 x 20 warriors

About 1050 points (which is a lot I must agree)

Then 700 - 950 points to spend depending on game size.

Struggling to think of what to support them with though

maybe CA will reduce the points a little

It might work better with 50ish Immortals. More versatility in weapon choice, MWBD is much more effective on Tesla, and higher strength means fighting vehicles will go a little easier.

I would also swap Orikan with a generic cryptek or Szeras. Szeras augments which is nice but Orikan doesn't really add anything a normal Cryptek isn't doing cheaper.

My theory with Orikan was that the 5+ invol save could be better used at 6" over the normal Cryptek 3"

I would lose it all together if I put Szeras in.

Dynasty:

SAUTEKH

HQ:

Orikan the Diviner

Lord

Overlord

Troops:

3 x 10 Immortals

2 x 20 warriors

Heavy:

3 x Annihilation Barge

1741pts

70 body horde

That brings up one of my “grinds my gears” about the Necron codex, the 3” bubble. Everyone else gets great buffs at 6”, but oh no, not Necrons...

But on topic, Necron horde is a challenge. Our troops are on the expensive side, limiting what additional toys you can bring. We’re slow, and we all know that 8th is hard on the MEQ like units.

That being said, I do like the deceiver to shove them in your opponents face. Make them mephrit to take advantage of the additional ap at half range. The deceiver also works on vehicles, so you can jump a monolith up before your turn and still drop units. Ghost arks as well.

This is a perfect example of Necrons getting abused this edition. How can we fit anything representing deathless legions in a 3" bubble, compound this with an army rule that we seem to pay a premium for in our units that can be ignored by the battle shock mechanic or just this editions ease of armies that eat 20 man warrior squads for breakfast.

In regards to horde armies for necrons this edition, you can field 60-100 warriors and hope the dice gods favor you. Or realistically, you need to keep your troops low enough to fit in the other units that can deal with high powered units that your opponents may bring.

(BTW, my local meta consists of several Imperial Knights, a couple Eldar soups, and one Imperial Guard players...so I usually just practice setting up my silver bowling pins [though my old Army buddy plays Word Bearer so and we can occasionally have some fun games], so I have had mostly bad experiences in 8th edition)

And our best aura isn't an aura. I like MWBD but I wish there was more consistency. Most armies can buff the whole army if you pack them in tight. We buff one infantry unit (and not even any infantry!). If The Lords Will was +1 to wound for a unit, that would at least be consistent.

And on top of that it bugs me how completely our HQs lack synergy with the troops. They are all very melee focused but are going to be with ranged troops. So they almost never get to use the weapons you paid for but if they do get into combat they aren't good enough to really do much, so they tend to just feel like dead weight once they've used their buff for the turn. Destroyer Lords are the most frustrating in that regard. The buff is nice but if it's ever close enough to actually do something then things have gone horribly wrong.
