Emperor's Spears Tactica

So, with this chapter tactic and the Indomitus Crusader detachment, how do you guys think we should equip our Intercessors? Standard Bolt Rifles or Assault Bolt Rifles? I assume the Sergeant gets the detachment buff as well, so he'll have 4 attacks, probably give him a power sword. Any thoughts?

The standard Bolt Rifles are still much better than the Assault Bolt Rifles.

Assault Bolters with the Stratagem are 20 S4 AP0 D1 hits at 12".

Bolt Rifles with the Stratagem are ~27 S4 AP-1 D1 hits 15".

I don't think being able to advance and still shoot is worth the difference.

(Assuming a unit of 10 models to maximize CP efficiency)

What do you think at lower points levels, say 1000pts? Should I still be running full squads or 3 squads of 5 in a Battalion? Are we running these guys forward to get stuck in asap or waiting for the enemy to come to us?

Their role wouldn't really change. +1A doesn't make them a melee unit as we could already see with Reivers and the ES chapter tactic won't really change it all that much either. Move them to the middle of the board and shoot at things within 15". Decide whether you want to charge something or not depending on how the game goes.

Big squads or small squads also depends on the rest of your list I guess so not really easy to say. Maybe you won't have enough CP for such a detachment anyway considering it's at least 3CP to use the Bolter Stratagem even once (1CP for the detachment, 1CP for the upgrade and 1CP for the Bolter Stratagem). That's quite the investment in small games.

The loop hole is have a 10 man intercessor squad gain the veteran ability and then combat squad it for 2 vet squads versus spending multiple CPs.

You don't actually save a CP by doing this, in fact you're watering down the value of the CP you spend on the bolt strats, since it only affects 5 guys instead of 10.

>15" they are better but only barely. A unit of 10 kills ~1.5 more T3 Sv4+ models with Auto Bolt Rifles at that range but considering that you usually want to be near the middle of the board with your Intercessors you'd be usually within 15" range anyway and there the regular Bolt Rifles kill ~1.5 T3 Sv4+ models more. Also >24" Bolt Rifles kill ~3 more of those models since Auto Bolt Rifles can't even shoot there. It's pretty much a wash with a clear advantage for regular Bolt Rifles. ;)

Not if you're doing it for the extra attacks only. I would rather spend 3 CP than 5.

In that particular case, I will agree.

To be honest I wouldn't even pay those CP for just the extra attack. If I wanted a unit with that profile I'd take Reiver.

Or take both? That's pretty much the only way to build upon the chapter tactic I'd weight of attacks. So both relievers and 3 attack troops in bulk numbers is probably the better option over tacticals, scouts, ASM. Veterans might be a good option, with storm shields, but 3 attack intercessors with an additional leadership seem like great troops.
