Auric Gods “Kataphraktoi”

I’ve just finished reading Auric Gods and am intrigued by a couple of mentions of Kataphractoi.

From the description it seems to be some sort of alternate jet bike squad. In the book Dawn Eagles are mentioned as are Vertus Praetors but I don’t think they are Agamatus Bikes from 30k.

Anyone have any idea what they are? Is this the first hint of a new unit?

Cheers

That's just the term for the caste/division of the Custodes that covered scouting and reconnaissance, and so fly the jetbikes or pilot the vehicles. You've got the hykanatoi (foot custodians), tharantoi (heavy or shock troops, so terminators and Saggitarum guard), moritoi (dreadnoughts), the ephoroi (intelligence/counterintelligence agents and assassins) and the kataphraktoi.

They're broad divisions that cross shield-companies so anyone on a dawneagle or agamatus jetbike is going to be part of the Kataphraktoi.

Thanks Sandlemad, where is this detailed?

It's in horus heresy book 7 inferno in the custodes fluff section

Yup! I think it broadly doesn't conflict with the background in the 8th edition codex if we consider these as very general terms that cross Shield-Companies. I take the Shield-Companies/Hosts as more formalisations of particular duties or watches (e.g. the Solar Watch guarding the outer reaches of the Solar System, the Shadowkeepers being those cusodians that are taking their turn guarding the Dark Cells) than discrete entities like space marine companies. Most would have varying mixes of the different castes.
