Captain Sandoval
Heya folks, Looking for some advice on kitting out a 5-man Sternguard squad to roll with Kantor in a Lasback. At present, I was thinking of going fairly minimal with a Combi-melta and Meltagun combo, and a Sergeant with a Power Fist. That'll give me two meltas and two fists for anti-vehicle shenanigans. Thoughts? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351901-kitting-out-sternguard-dorn-edition/ Share on other sites
HighMarshalAmp
No SIBs? In that case, go with Company Veterans, which cost the same. The only reason to take Sternguard over those is their SIBs plus Stratagem. Well, that and they can take Heavy Weapons, but you haven't mentioned a Multi-Melta either. The Company Vets on the other hand get the bodyguard ability so you can keep Kantor alive a bit longer if he happens to get shot whilst they're still alive. Also, your crew is rather shooty, but they're gonna end up in CC sooner or later anyway, so a few more melee weapons won't hurt. Non-Sergeant Sternguard can't take those, Company Vets can. Captain Sandoval
Yeah, I was going for shooty to take advantage of the IF strategem. As for Sternguard, I totally forgot to mention the Sergeant will have a SIB as well, so that's 3 SIBs, but I can cut the Combi-melta if need be for 4 to take advantage of the Sternguard tactic. As for Company Vets, I realize that's not just a DA thing anymore, but I'd rather stick to fluffiness, also, I don't have enough bits for them atm. Thanks for the feedback! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351901-kitting-out-sternguard-dorn-edition/#findComment-5205802 Share on other sites
Panzer
Imo not using SIB on Sternguard is a waste. If you want a bunch of special or heavy weapons you could just as well go with Devastators instead. We had a similar thread a few days ago here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351176-how-do-you-equip-your-sternguard-veterans/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351901-kitting-out-sternguard-dorn-edition/#findComment-5205878 Share on other sites
HighMarshalAmp
As for Company Vets, I realize that's not just a DA thing anymore, but I'd rather stick to fluffiness, also, I don't have enough bits for them atm. Now first, the CVs we have today have always been available in the Command Squad, which is now split into the Apothecary, the Ancient, the Champion and these guys. Second, if you have the bits for 5 Sternguard, how can you not have the bitz for the same thing by a different name? As for cutting the combi vs having 3 SIBs... in one case, your specialized vehicle hunting unit is left with only one vehicle hunting weapon, in the other, you have kitted out the ablative wound guys with SIBs to make use of Stratagems. But with only 3 guys, these CP can be better spent and if you lose men, that option is gone anyway. I understand about the fluffiness 100% myself. I'm like that as well. Captain Sandoval
With regard to both replies, I'm using half a Tac Squad box for my Sternguard, that's why, haha! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351901-kitting-out-sternguard-dorn-edition/#findComment-5206721 Share on other sites

I condone your choice of miniatures, good sir. Captain Sandoval
I thought it would be especially fluffy with only a couple hundred or so survivors from Rynn's World, so their armor wouldn't be nearly as ornamented as the normal Sternguard minis. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351901-kitting-out-sternguard-dorn-edition/#findComment-5206858 Share on other sites
Skorp
I couldnt help grabbing my first sternguard kit for mine. I like the idea of my vets being decked out in flare compared to the new primaris recruits to amplify the contrast between them. It does feel like a waste to just give them bolters but oh well. Wanting to magnetize the power fist on my sarge. Going to paint the vets to the highest standard I can. Captain Sandoval
Well, there are plenty of pieces from older marks in the Tac box thankfully (enough for 5 Vets), so I've been having fun mixing and matching to make each of them unique whilst leaving the Tac Marines themselves all in Mk VII. That's how I've ended up with a Battalion of Mk VI clad Raven Guard I'll never get around to painting... I'm a fan of using Mark III armor for my vets. Seems appropriate to evoke the hard edged appearance of the original legion for the current elites. Plus, I'm not a fan of the overly flashy appearance of the official veteran kits. Sons of Dorn should be practical and humble, focused on getting the current job done rather than displaying the glory of prior acts.
