Vigilus Detachments

That didnt really happen. It was all rumour mill.

You know, I think robots got a stealth buff... Considering how ALL the stealthy tactics got nerfed into cover, and our dakka bots ignores cover... oh boy that makes them even more appealing.

hey, it could have fooled me and half the stygies players, so oh well! I think they are still pretty good, and I cannot wait to see how they play again.

Sat here thinking how I can get some cheap normal servitors then remembered the 30 Tech Thralls I have sitting in a box...! 4ppm is kinda insane too, considering what they bring in this case. If you want to run Kataphron this seems like a really good way to go.

Guess I could build up some Castellax as Fist/ Flame Kastellans too!

So after a quick peek, I have slightly adjusted my initial reaction to the AdMech Specialist Detachments.  Summarized below:

Cybernetica Cohort: Dominus, Enginseers, Datasmiths and Kastelans (oh my!).  The WT is once per battle and still very random, so it's a hard pass for me.  Relic is ok assuming you don't want to take Datasmiths (or just want to expand their range), but since the Datasmith dropped in cost a bit in CA2018 they're not as bad a tax as before.

The cash money are the Stratagems, which give your Robots +3" Charge (if within 3" of a Datasmith) and/or make their weapons (read: HPB) Assault instead of Heavy, as long as they're under Aegis Protocol.  The former makes Fistbots much more mobile than before, though they'll still get outpaced by Knights and Bikes (to name a few).  The latter is a bit more interesting as the Robot's biggest issue traditionally is their lack of accuracy if going mobile, and this helps to overcome that.

Overall:  B-, not necessary but certainly nicer to get your robots moving a bit better, and if you're investing in 4 or more of them (not units, models) is probably a no-brainer.

Servitor Maniple: Dominus, Enginseers, Breachers, Destroyers and Servitors (!).  I'll admit, I didn't read this one well enough on first pass.  The WT allows you to sacrifice a Servitor within 6" of a unit of Kataphrons and your Warlord to heal a Kataphron for D3 wounds or return 1 slain model to the unit with a single wound.  At first this doesn't seem like a big deal until you realize a few things: 1. Servitors just dropped to 4 ppm in CA2018.  2.  Kataphrons are much better thanks to this SD (more on that to follow).  3.  You can stack this with MoM to heal 2D3 wounds on any Kataphron unit(s) per turn OR return a slain Kataphron and heal D3 wounds to it.  Trading a 4 point model to return and (on average dice) heal a Kataphron back to full every turn is nothing to scoff at.  The Relic is melee-based, and therefore doesn't thrill me, so it's probably a pass.

Once again, the Stratagems sell this SD.  The first lets you spend a CP to give a unit of Kataphrons 5+ Invul.  This is a pretty nice boost for Destroyers and is certainly appreciated on Breachers too, though probably not to the same extent since they already have a nice 3+ Save.  The second Stratagem is absolute gold: for 1CP, you can add 1 to hit rolls for a unit of Kataphrons within 6" of a Dominus (has to have the same keyword, so no shenanigans).  Note that this doesn't specify melee or shooting, so it's useful for both your Destroyers spamming Plasma or Grav as well as your Torsion Cannon/Hydraulic Claw Breachers.

Overall:  B+, this is a very good SD to make Kataphron considerably more interesting than before, and combined with the huge points drops in CA2019 the whole setup feels a bit more in-line with what we'd expect.

Excellent writeup and definitely food for thought here.

A unit of kastellans charging around with aegis up and hitting on 4s is rather nice, they can get onto objectives and have that sweet 2+/4++ and a bit different to the usual gunline role. Id still keep the dominus by them for that reroll 1. Thinking maybe running them as 2 fisty 2 shooty in one unit as an elite objective grabber could be fun....if not rather expensive.

The kataphron one im probably more interested in.

Thinking of running a squad of 6 (mainly as thats what i have model wise - but also, seems a good general size when you are having to burn CP to give them bonuses).

Now the main thing is what to take them as.

Destroyers seem the obvious choice...hitting on 3s now with grav/plasma seems very nice. 5++ to aid survivability even more so. Being able to regen units makes that plasma overheat slightly less painful too.

However with the points saved...im more likely to have more plasma already in my vanguard squads.

Breachers, sat in cover on an objective in your back line..... 2+/5++, with a CC weapon (2x S6 -1AP attacks, potentially hitting on 3s?), regenning, are gonna be hard to shift.

I already liked the heavy ac rifle, and it hitting on 3s when you need to is great.

But do people think the torsion cannon may now be worth it to deal with DSing tough targets? I still dont like that its 1 shot...but hitting on 3s isbetter...but im still not convinced by it.

And if you run Kataphron-heavy, you could take the spare Breacher arm(s), add to a human, and voila! insta-servitor.

What about:

- Guardsmen bodies

- Skitarii backpack and head (vanguard helmet)

- Some big-armed weapon (like Kataphron's claw or something

- maybe leave the other arm gone, or make it look like it was cut off. Wires coming out?

Would probably involve green stuff and prayers, but maybe that could work for servitors? I've got a bunch of the tech-thralls as well so I'm just going to run with those tbh.

...and how many (servitors) is interesting?

Multiples of 4 - the unit size is fixed at 4. And with Rule of 3 - a maximum of 12 servitors is usable. Plus heavy weapons servitors, if you want to waste points.

God damn is that it?! They'll get rolled off the board before you can even be used for the strat... Then again 36 points for 2 Heavy Bolters or 40 for two Plasma Cannons means they can at least contribute with some lucky shots/ buff aura/ Canticles.

Though if the unit size is truly limited like that, then FW Scyllax Automata for HB variants or just the Servo-Automata for the Servo-Arm kind are expensive, but very cool.

I"m guessing they don't want us to swarm the board with servitors, like plague zombies or something.....

I will never be convinced to bring a Torsion cannon with any of my Breachers. 20pts for a discount multimelta (which is cheaper in points) on a platform that on average hits 50% of the time (without any modifiers) is not worth it in my eyes.

Yeah this was my thinking too....for some reason i thought the torsion cannon had extra rules/effect other than it just being a bad multimelta....but it seems not!

Shame as fluff/looks wise its cool

I suppose the points drops all-around make Kataphrons more interesting.  Keep in mind that you can sack Servitors to heal Breachers too, and a 5++ isn't worthless even when you have a 3+ Save.

With the +1 BS, they might hit something reliably, and with less costs, they might be worth their points.

But the +1 BS strat gives me a rather ridiculous idea - 12 grav destroyers, +1 BS strat, +1 BS with the baymax strat, reroll 1s with dominus. Voila, 60 shots of rerollable 2+ grav - math-wise almost enough to one-shot a demon primarch (26W against T6-9/5++), or wipe out 3 full squads of MEQ, not even factoring in the phosphor. Combine with Mars for additional 11-12 MW in case of overkill, or Lucius to drop in range of the desired target. :biggrin.:

That's what, 300pts in heavy servitors, some 400 in Robots(?)...

Expensive, but at the same time, it can do a lot of damage. And isn't exactly nothing to be sniffed at...

Hmmm...

600p (12*50), half a dozen CP. Robots are 220 (2 dakkabots). Granted, a lot of points, but the damage output is just ridiculously high. Hit-or-miss, but a rather interesting thing to calculate. And with Carl, it would be pretty much invulnerable from charges, due to wiping out whole MEQ squads in overwatch. :whistling:

Indeed, farming up enough Servitors might be a bit of a pain.  Either dig into FW or perhaps utilize GSC minis blended with some AdMech/IG bits . . . any other ideas to pull in cheap/accurate Servitor models?

I'm looking at two sprues of Goliath gangers for Necromunda and leftover Katapron bits and thinking I could come up,with something.

I can second any suggestions to bash AdMech bits with GS Cults kits to make really nice 'basic' Servitors; these are made from only GS Neophytes, a Skitarii backpack, and the bits left over from the Kataphrons. As mentioned by others, the AdMech line provides so many bits, the main question is really which base model/s you want to use.
