A few questions about an Onegar...

I use my O ager with an Eradication Beamer.

It's good. Has the capacity to really surprise people with powerful shots, bit is so blatantly unreliable that I never feel disappointed in it - I use it a bit like a psychological anchor.

Durable, and big (it's my only Onager, no Knights), and intimidating looking thing in itself, opponents devote a lot more effort to neutralising it than they 'should', whilst it's also done that job rather well for my tastes.

It's also handy for being targeted with Protocols for 1CP too.

OK, so it seems I can squeeze in one with a Neutron Laser! Woohoo

I've never owned one of these kits - can I leave the top part of the model un-glued. Will it balance on top of the legs or will I need to magnetise? Just curious for storage and transportation purposes.

Lol I need to have the army ready ASAP for a tournament coming up after Xmas...

You really do need at least two onagers for them to start paying you back.

And with these amazing and totally unexpected points drop for the onager, you may as well field 3 or even 4. (depending on your list size).

I've only got enough points for one due to the Knight detachment I run alongside my AdMech. I feel that with a Castellan in my list the Onager might be ignored!

My WIP Admech has lost almost 300 points. But I was building infiltrators, kataphrons and crawlers :p

3 crawlers alone is saving me 60 points! Tbh i wish I could have more (stupid rule of 3 and stupid non squadron). I suppose that's why GW felt they could take a point cut

eradicator ray onagers are good as a followup punch to a neutron laser onager to chip the last few wounds off of something, or as a battle-cannon light when wanting to shoot at marines. It really is a great all arounder in terms of a gun, and you can almost always find some sort of target for it. Plus it can surprise a walker that came too close with the extra damage it can put out at close range.

Also it's arguably better than a neutron laser against necrons, but for all other targets you wanna be doing the neutron dance like everyone else.

One onager still has  a role due to the increase in leadership aura that the broad spectrum data tether brings  especially if your binging 10 man ad mech units its +1 to all leadership withing 6.

never underestimate the erad beamer ... at shot range it does the Omnissiah's work ... like a diet neutron laser .

So I'll definitely be getting an Onegar and equipping it with a Neutron Laser and 2 Cognis Heavy Stubbers.

As a free unit that a day or so ago I couldn't afford it's pretty fantastic. I really felt I lacked a bit of extra anti vehicle punch and I'm running enough other threats that I feel it won't be focused on.

magnets are your friend. why do one when you can do all?

I never crossed into magnet territory! Despite a history of modelling and painting I never got around to using and working magnets into models. Probably too old to learn new tricks now! Lol

I'm older and suck at modeling. I was able to scrub through some magnetizing. You'll probably do better than I!

honestly all you need is a file to make a little indent in the semicircle of the onager's gun turret, place a magnet in the gun itself, and then repeat for every guns.

Indeed, I found it rather simple just for the HFB/NL setup.  Icarus Array would have been a bit harder but I feel it's possible.

Call me lazy, but I just glued the rocket boxes of the Icarus array to every onager. If it's armed with neutron instead, I just close the still-movable covers and voila, no missiles in sight.

To be fair, ive always skipped over the eradication ray.

Neutron laser is more efficient at dealing with armour

Icarus array is more efficient at dealing with troops/light vehicles/flyers (with the strat, you are still hitting infantry on 2+ despite skyfire)

Obviosuly you pay more of a tax for them.

If i could run more than 3 onagers i totally would though, and maybe that would see some eradication rays on the table for me.

Also, once painted, most of the weapons are then such a tight fit that htey stay on pretty well without magnets etc

I feel like the points difference from risky damage to reliable damage from Rad Beamer to Neutron Lasers is a bit too trivial still.

Like, one isn't especially cheap and nasty and unreliable. And the more expensive one isn't that expensive, but is a fairly more solid thing.

You know?

I feel like it'd be lovely if the Eradication Beamer also had a melee & pistol profile, it'd be rather wonderful. (And distinctly different from the NL.)

E.g.

Melee: Onager can make three hit rolls with the beamer for each attack spent. (Blazing wildly, no reliable benefit in hitting, unless you spent a stratagem for protocols with a tether.)

Pistol: Single shot on its close range profile.

Would make it mighty... Entertaining.

Perhaps a touch absurd too.

Maybe not.

Feel you on the extra cost vs reliability issue, thats why ive never fielded an eradication ray (especially when we tend to lack other long range antitank outside the neutron laser)

although being able to use eradication ray in CC would be funny, I think allowing any vehicles (or model) to use their big guns in CC would open up a huge can of worms ('why can't I fire my leman russ battle cannon in combat?")

What I've always wanted is a dedicated anti infantry onager with a volkite demi-culverin mounted on it ;)

What I've always wanted is a dedicated anti infantry onager with a volkite demi-culverin mounted on it

As long as it's GW produced so I don't have to deal with resin/plastic combo shenanigans (my least favourite combination of materials).

At this point, price drops on Onagers have made the Neutron Laser possibly the best high powered shooting AdMech has access to, especially given its range.  It's much more reasonable to jam 2-3 of these into a Detachment when they're sub 120 points.
