varnish & metallics/water effects

I'm coming toward the end of a loooooong journey with my Tartaros Terminators, just in time for them to apparently become half-usable in 8th with CA!

I'm planning on matte varnishing these guys when they're done, but I plan for my sergeant to have a pool of water from a burst main at his feet:

I'll be pouring that with epoxy glue, but the question is, will matte varnish kill the effect of it?

Also, does matte varnish kill off the metallic effect of metal paints?

I suggest the following to solve your problem:

    1. Finish off the paint job completely including final varnishing
    2. get a thin 2.5 - 5 ml syringe
    3. mix your water effect (epoxy glue, 2-component clear resin or waterbased water effect) and suck it up into the syringe
    4. carefully and slowly eject the water effect onto the areas of the base where you want the water and let it dry for 24 hrs

You can also varnish after the application of water effects but then you should mask off the water effect on the base with blue tack (pay attention to the water effect edges and neatly cover the edges with blue tack using a sculpting tool.

For your future basing projects that include water effects (or basing in generally with or without water effects), I suggest you paint the models pinned to corks and build and paint the base seperately, this will make it easier for your to apply water effects on the base. Then you drill your base with a pin vice and attach the model to the base using the pins that the cork was attached to.

Matte varnish will kill off some of the sheen of metallic paints so if you wantt o keep the sheen on the metallic parts then you can brush on gloss varnish with a paint brush, but make sure you thin 1:1 and apply several coats instead of one thick coat in order to avoid brushmarks in the varnish.
