A dark thought. In the future there's no christmas, only war

40K has is a grim-dark universe, it war, death and tyranny on a level that is unbelievable.

And thank to the Emperor removing nearly all traces religion, it would also be a world without the winter holiday what we celebrate.

I can just imagine a tiny Tim running up the the Emperor during the unification of Terra. And yelling "Merry Christmas. God bless us, every one!"

And the Emperor going "Ho-Ho-No! No god, no Christmas! Guards! make sure that this citizen is properly illuminated."

And with that dark and slightly humours thought. I hope that every one has a nice Holladay and are kind to everyone"

They have Sanguinala and the Feast of the Emperor’s Ascension that fill the same time frame.

True, and from a pure PR point of view that would make sense.

I wonder what they were called during the Great Crusade.

One of the main aspects of the Crusade was Imperial Truth which tried to end religious worship so chances are it didn't survive in anything like it's current form. You also have to consider the tradition may have been long since lost in the thousands of years that came before and after the Unification.

Truth is the festivals such Sanguinala are just GW tongue in cheek references to contemporary celebrations, it's more of a forth wall breaking wink to the audience.

It's possible it could have been replaced though by something more like a harvest festival but in general the Emperor seemed to be a bit frowny face on anything that lead to accidental chaos worship.

And happy Sanguinala to you too. :)

AFAIK both feasts were invented after the Heresy and after the Ecclesiarchy came to power. I wonder if Girlyman told big E about that nonsense and what will happen to them.

Yeah, but think about it - I bet plenty of worlds put all the festive sacrifice back into pre-christmas celebrations like midwinterblot. Probably some extra, too. ;) Come to think of it, I recall the Word Bearers getting upset with the Tau tor interrupting something like this. Ur-Clemait, I think. Very festive place.

Our local Warhammer Store is making a diorama where various 40k/AoS characters, each representing the local GW staff, are celebrating the holidays:

Btw using the new Chapter Approved custom character rules to make Santa Claus in 40k would be an awesome idea. An Ork Santa Claus maybe.

Sorry, Santa Claus already exists. He goes by the name Logan Grimnar in 40K. SCNR

Don't forget to make his sidekick Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Krampus.

A lot of holidays evolved from tribal traditions around noticable repeating celestial or seasonal events.

Presumably after Old Night and Humanity backslid (not for the first time, it's happened in our reality), and maybe even before then, these worlds were colonized and had their own distinct cultures and habitats, and they took on their own spin of things.

And much like the Early Church adopting tribal pagan celebrations to 'grease the wheels' of conversion, I imagine when Loregar's first Religion took over with the imperials, they did similar things (if they didn't just sick the Bolter ladies on them)

Ah, the traditional slaughter of an entire planet of heritics on what was Old Terra's Winter Solstice celebrations.

We wish you a merry genocide,

We wish you a merry genocide,

We wish you a merry genocide and an exterminatus!

Blessed bolters we bring, to you and your kin,

We wish you a merry genocide and an exterminatus!

the winter holiday what we celebrate

Is it that much of a struggle to remember those of us who live upside down also exist? Typical northerner. ;)

Not our fault you adopted our winter holiday without translating it to your zone properly. ;)

No, we will keep celebrating it on the 25th of December, thank you.

We will keep wearing Santa hats. And getting heatstroke because it’s like 40degC.

We will keep roasting chestnuts over an open fire. Despite the total fire ban because our fire warning signs go up to ‘Catastrophic’.

We will keep hoping for a white Christmas. Never mind that it hasn’t snowed here since like one time in the fifties.

...would it kill you to make your holiday traditions a bit more inclusive for the other half of the world? :P

There's no Christmas now. There's only Chri$tma$.

At least in the 41st millennium it's regained a more spiritual sense.

I suspect that Unification Day would take its place.

Side note: I liked Antipodean Christmas, but the flipside of that is a winter with no festival :(
