Captain Idaho
In an army with Jump Packs Vanguard I'm finding it hard to justify adding an Ancient who does have to travel by Rhino etc. On the basis that I don't take the Standard, the Soldier's Blade becomes an obvious pick for a Captain (may as well get the tree extra Relic huh). Honestly it's a great sword. Probably better than a Relic Blade for cheaper. But what if I could get the Standard to work with far ranging Vanguard? The initial charge is possible to stand close enough by; with a disembarkation from a Rhino, move, run etc you can get within 6" of the Vanguard. Later though? If you kill your target you likely don't have time to stand there and soak fire whilst the poor Ancient runs up the field. So should an army that includes this banner think about (gulp) a Land Raider to survive long enough to get the thing up the table? Aim for the knockout first strike to encourage it and any more a bonus? Or save points and take the sword? Any ideas? jonjacob
this is why I planning to use vanguard and ancient in a storm raven (no jump pack). in your case a notable choice would be sterguard in a razor back with the ancient. you could have a captain in another with more sterguard and vanguard screen the transport; or the other way around. That said a landraider isn't a bad choice as depend where the character deploys from it. the raider is one hell of a screen for a character or even line of sight blocking. What about an ancient on a bike?. keeps the synergy with the vanguard in term of inches moved. unless index is a no go? Prot
I really don’t like flyer transports right now. I think they’re overpriced (all of them) and Orks easily rip them apart. But you guys might get more mileage out of them. Idaho I will say I often use an Ancient in situations he can’t inherently keep up with. Personally I start the guy in a Rhino or Repulsor or whatever. Deploy 3” out, advance, move whatever. There are many games where he’s always advancing or out of range for a turn but I always find he’s in range of something and rarely out of the game. That being said I really haven’t used my Ultramarines in a full tilt assault scenario. I do try mid table control. The other consideration is the weird wording where he only allows one attack in cc. I’m not sure that worth it. I’d rather run an Apothecary in such a list. Captain Idaho
I believe he allows units to increase their attack characteristic, which is a whole unit wide benefit. Anyway, yes I'll give the tike a try as being able to advance alongside the Vanguard is a possibility. And that's why the Emperor invented Relic Blades too ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/352400-getting-the-standard-of-maccragge-inviolate-to-work/#findComment-5217195 Share on other sites
