Post CA 2018 Question - 500 point starting

Ok, so I have been around a long while and have been playing off and on since Rogue trader days. I have not played much since about 6th edition and it's time I get back into it. I like my wolves, as they have always been my first love, and I want to basically start over and get that new army feel. With all the new primaris and with the CA 2018 just now coming out this feels like a good time. What is a decent starting point for a base 500 point army to build the rest of my list around. I don't really know the whole meta around the armies right now but I am going to be playing mostly at my FLGS, so any advice for a good start is all I am really looking for at the moment. Like I said, about 500 points or so to get back in. Thanks in advance for any help/advice/links whatever. Thanks!

Well if you're set on Primaris you wouldn't go wrong with a squad of intercessors and some hellblasters. Post CA and in the current meta, repulsors are pretty great if you plan to keep scaling up.

Are you wanting to include some of the more classic choices?

To start, aim for a Battalion to start off.

What Troops do you plan to use?

What models do you already have?

If you're starting from scratch, which it seems like you are...

HQ:

- Rune Priest, a Jump Pack won't go wrong for you.

- Wolf Priest, shines with 'Claws, Blood, Sky, Swift. BC's run on foot, Sky will force the WP to need a JP, Swift means the WP gets a bike. You can mix and match, however this is a bit harder.

Troops

- Grey Hunters are gold. You can either MSU or build for durable units. MSU is multiple small units.

- Intercessors I'm not familiar with, but with the points drop, they're going to be even better.

- Blood Claws work best with a WP. 8, with a WGPL and a WP in a Rhino is a cheap and cost effective assault unit.

Heavy Support

- Long Fangs are solid. Weapons to taste; don't pass up on the fifth weapon!

- Hellblasters are what I call light fire support. I would recommend the basic weapon to start, the alternatives will vary in use and how to deploy and maximize their effectiveness.

Elites, Fliers, etc.

The Elites are pretty well forced into Wulfen.

Fliers vary; the Stormhawk is vastly underrated if you think it's of no use. Give it an Icarus Stormcannon and Skyhammer Missile Launcher and rule the skies. This thing hunts well.

Outside of that, please, by all means, what are you interested in thus far?

From our more old-school range, Grey Hunters are one of the better MEQ troop choices. I normally load mine to the gills with plasma or pack them in a Razorback.

Our Dreadnoughts are very solid, particularly the Axe/Shield versions and Bjorn is truly hardcore (although probably too much at anything less than 1500 points).

Wulfen are good but expensive and really need a delivery system and Wolf Priest so I would probably save them for higher value games. Thunderwolf Cavalry were great in 7th but seem a bit lackluster in this edition.

Long Fangs are absolutely fantastic and I never leave the Fang without a Pack of these old boys. I tend to favour missile launchers and plasma cannons but other loadouts can work too. They have a built-in reroll of 1s to hit meaning they don't need a character to babysit them. They also have access to a 1CP stratagem that allows them to reroll all failed to-wound rolls for a turn. Long Fangs are what other Chapters wish their heavy weapons troops were like.

For HQ's a Wolf Lord with Jump Pack, Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield is an excellent and brutal choice. Our +1 to-hit on the turn we charge negates the weapon's penalty and his ability to Heriocally Intervene 6" will make enemies nervous of charging anything near him.

All good suggestions. I am not set in any way on Primaris, I just thought that was where the meta was headed. I have around 40,000 points of mostly painted and assembled minis going all the way back to a squad of RTB01 marines, plus, I have a weakness for beakys, and have loads of those guys laying around. The only thing I really am short on is Primaris squads and flyers (unless you count two thunderhawks :whistling::whistling:). I'll keep playing around looking for a good starting point based off what you've given me. Thanks!

Your opponent doesn't need to charge anything for you to heroically intervene. As long as there is an enemy unit with in 6" of your characters during their charge phase, you can declare it and smash them. It's a great way of avoiding overwatch

don't worry, despite the GW hype, most of us struggle to use Primaris units as they typically perform only average and were slightly overcosted. I haven't played post CA so I don't know how the new costs will affect my overall army. So don't feel compelled to use Primaris models.

I very recently had good success with Intercessors with stalker bolt rifles. It was a small game against Mechanicum skitarii list, but the stalkers did well against T3 and their AP was very good. And even if they moved, it's still 4+ to hit.

But my image of Wolves has always been combined arms, Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Long Fangs and now the newly joined Primaris brothers working together to take down prey. Storywise, the Wolves don't seem to be antagonistic towards the Primaris, and the Primaris in turn have embraced Fenrisian culture enthuthiastically. The only thing bad about the Primaris is that they also at times lose their head to wulfen tendencies, though none have become wulfen yet. Meaning a group of Inceptors decide to charge into combat instead of their usual fire support.

Crunchwise, the most useful Primaris units to supplement a Wolves force are Inceptors and Hellblasters I believe. the former is fast and can deepstrike, the second has the best AP and with Cunning of the wolf, can appear at any table edge.

Hope this helps.
