Plagues for Up and coming Xenos

I have a game vs Tau on the 29th

I have a death guard/ nurgle daemons list planned for about 2000 points and I reckon it's got about 14 CP

HQ chaos Lord balesword

Hq plague caster

T. Plague marines 7man 3*plasma guns sarge as the box set

T. Plague marines 8man 2 blight launchers, 2 flails, 1 axe

T. Poxwalkers 20

E. Noxious blight bringer

E. Foul blightspawn

E. Putrifier

HQ. Winged DG Daemon prince

Fa. 3 mephitic blight hawlers

Fa. bloat drone

Fa. Spawn

HQ poxbringer

Hq scrivener

T. 20 plague bearers

T 3 nurglings

T 3 nurglings

Obviously the plan is to advance under the cover of the MBH (who shoot tanks and crisis suits as the opportunity arises)

The pox walkers will actually form a rear guard as he is fond of a deep strike of crisis suits into my lines

The daemons arrive just outside the tau deployment and play the invulnerable buff and then start chopping.

Plague marines and nurglings take objectives

How does that sound?

The plague marines (even in cover) will get shred to pieces by 1/4 of the price infantry.

Split the poxwalker into 2 unit to guard the backline and mix the 2 plague marine into one unit, then play cloud of fly on them to make them untargetable, protecting them from all tau shooting. im not a fan of the plague bearer in unit under 30, or the scrivener that buff a single unit.

You also have the ratio of special character / plague marine wrong, 5 special dude (including the caster/ lord) to 15 marine! Cut that to 2 and get a second DP.

You should drop the spawn and get more bloat drone / PBC if you can, they are actually tough and dangerous and the signature of DG.

Blight hauler I dont know, they use to be terribly bad. Probably better to have PBC or 2x armiger for less point. Might actually be ok now.

Note that these are regular optimisation advice, if you play hardcore people you should follow them. Otherwise you're probably fine.

Well. Don't have a second Daemon Prince so can't follow up on that.

Do like the idea of a Massive plague squad so might tweek the list to have that instead.

Spawns a conversion, and I like him for that but is see your point. Might use the greater blight drone (either as is or as a bloat drone with the gun) I have instead of all those characters

Only have 1 pbc although I magnatised the guns so which would you suggest?

With the daemons I only have one of some of the Hq options so I figured the scrivener boosts the movement, the pox ring has the psychics and then that unit generates another 5cp

I prefer the spitters on the PBC for most application.

I think the daemon are really worth it. Plague bearers really benefit from being 30 man. The scrivener just went up in point making him hard to justify over another poxbrigner.

Of course you have to deal with your availlable models, do tell us what you settle on and how the game went!

Totally agree on "boys over toys" view. I think the entrance number for taking a scrivener would be about 60 plaguebearers. He is not as good as poxbringer on his own.

Hawlers receive huge point reduct in CA2018, they are ~117pts each? So definitely worth a try now.

To echo what others have said, lose the spawn and some characters. I used to include a single spawn as the occasional points filler, but it is basically a first blood give away. I would also cut the blightbringer (best to use him to speed up slow hordes of zombies, and you only got 20 of them). I would also not use the putrifier; he also has his place in blight grenade lists, but you don't have enough plague marines for him to be worthwhile either. These units are power multipliers, but you are not getting any bang for your buck if you include them to buff 2 squads.

Also, if model availability is limiting your options, consider playing a smaller point value game. Using sleek, focused army will feel better than filling out 2k with everything and the kitchen sink.

I agree and understand cutting characters for bodies, but I have to say I do understand the 'fun' factor they bring and don't blame you for trying it all out for fun.

I do agree with Triton that it's really nice having Flies on the larger troop squad. Keep those guys from getting wacked as long as you can, and tie up the heavy hitters with your daemon element.

So tweeked the list

Broke up the Poxwalkers in to 2 small squads.

The plague marines are now a 12 man squad

Dropped 2 of the supporting characters and took a greater blight drone. Still have 50 points to spend tho

Would you guys think it is Worth dropping the Greater Blight Drone and amalgamating the Outrider Detachment with the main detachment to take the Plague Burst Crawler instead?

I haven't adjusted the daemons at all as the only other characters I have are pricier (horticulurous and scabourax/ great unclean one).

My opponent hasn't fought the daemons yet so I figured I would leave them in as they are a reasonably cheap body count.

I'm open to suggestions for other tweeks.

I discounted terminators as I think the Tau will murder them but I do have:

5 blightlords (need building)

3 deathshroud

1 lord/sorcerer/ typhus (old version)

1 Lord of contagion

I also have Necrosis, 2 hell brutes and a rhino

For the daemons I also have 3 plague drones

Would anyone make any suggestions?

So the list now stands as:

HQ chaos Lord balesword

Hq plague caster

T. PLAGUE MARINES 12man 2 blight launchers, 2 flails, 1 AXE. sarge as the box set.

T. POXWALKERS 10

T. Poxwalkers 10

E. Foul blightspawn

HQ. Winged DG Daemon prince

Fa. 3 mephitic blight hawlers

Fa. bloat drone

Fa. GREATER BLIGHT DRONE

HQ poxbringer

Hq scrivener

T. 20 plague bearers

T 3 nurglings

T 3 nurglings

I still have about 50 points to spare which I could take the spawn or an extra base of nurglings

Toying with dropping the GREATER BLIGHT DRONE in favour of a Plague Burst hawler which I think might be a little cheaper points wise

Im not familiar with the greater drone so I will leave that to you. If you have extra points I would add to the Poxwalkers to add a buffer for their unit size ability. The same could be said for Plaguebearers as well. Or use those points to switch out the Lord for another DP.

The plagueburst crawler is one of the Death Guard's strongest options (they are probably undercosted in order to move kits, but c'est la vie). The greater blightdrone, despite the name, often underperforms relative to its smaller cousins. Its weapons are not amazingly effective.

So given the game is tomorrow morning given all the info above would you guys reckon lose the Outrider Detachment, merge the bloat drone, MBH's and Daemon Prince into the regular detachment, in order to take a Plague Burst Crawler

And bulk out the pox walkers with what ever points are left?

So played until turn 3.

Final result was a draw on the Signal Denial mission from CA2018

Both drew some dreadful objectives (mine were crit objective, take and hole and defend of objective under all his infantry)

The MBH fragged his pathfinders and limited his marker lights turn one

Turn 2 the plague marines and PBC destroyed the big kroot squad

Made a rooky mistake and tried to charge the tau when the Daemons deep struck in. Meant I got hammered by rediculously accurate overwatch

Not sure how to deal with the Tau's overwatch. Every unit gets to overwatch within 6" of the charged unit. (give he is using the Tau Sept for 5+ overwatch

Theoretically I need to hit with multiple units but I rarely seem to have enough reaching the tau lines at the same time.

And my go to close combat guys are melted by crisis suits kitted out with plasma/ melta/ stupid-ass tau guns (all suits just carry one type of weapon)

To not get hit with overwatch, use cloud of flies on the unit you are charging with and have another friendly unit closer. I typically use the rhino I transported my cc unit with. After they disembark I move the rhino closer, then my cc unit is not the closest unit.

I dropped it this time in favour of the plague burst Crawler

In the past its been good at killing marines, I usually take it in an Outrider Detachment as fire support for advancing Daemon Prince, drone, and plague marines in a rhino

I've had no complaints about it when I've be using it with Power Levels. Its ability to regenerate lost wounds, while different to the rest of the force, is handy. It provides no end of entertainment when it heals itself back over the degrading profile level.

I was a little shocked when I was working out the actual points to find it is more expensive than the PBC.

If you use a slow army it if a great fire support for fast elements. But it is priced high so you have to want to take it because it is a really cool model
