What grabbed you? The hunt for White Dwarf: 301

Evening all,

I've recently got back into reading White Dwarf. I'm glad they have gone back to articles and battle reports as well as the general better community interaction. Although there are probably a few too many adverts and product plugs than in the magazines prime (I forget that GW is a business sometimes), I'm thoroughly enjoying reading through them. The magazines have been my main source of hobby, as the limited internet while working at sea only allows for basic forum access (no beautiful pictures from the Hall of Honour).

In an email discussion with one of my oldest friends, we were discussing the issues of White Dwarf that grabbed us into the hobby when we were kids.

I broke my foot when I was 12. My friend had just received the Battle for Macragge for his birthday and bought it over for something to do. Long story short it started us on a 14 year plus addiction into the hobby. But the part that really grabbed me was a battle report between the Salamanders chapter and some Iron Warriors in an old issue of White Dwarf he let me borrow later on. Like many others I was entranced by the fully painted armies and scenery.

Many years passed and we both went to different colleges and took up different careers. But even though we were not playing every Saturday in his parents garage we always managed a few games a year. His current project is a rather large Iron Warriors crusade, and as a tribute to that first issue of White Dwarf that grabbed me I'd like to raise a small 1500pt Salamanders army to oppose it. In keeping with the moment I would like to remain faithful to the list in the battle report (give or take a few things, it was 4 editions ago) as possible.

Now, the hard part, I cannot find the list.

I have tried some google-fu, and I believe the battle report was featured in White Dwarf 301 (UK). There was an article called 'The Iron Hammer' listed in Lexicanum which may be what I am looking for.

If any of the members could help me find the battle report, or even just the list. I would be extremely grateful.

I believe it was a 4th edition battle report, however it featured a number of older models. I remember the old-school metal Space Marine Captain as well as a number of Mk1 rhinos in the Salamanders list. I also believe that the Iron Warriors were using the old 3.5 codex as they had an allied Basilisk. It could of well of been a 3rd edition battle report.

Can anybody help?

I've dug out my White Dwarf #301 and unfortunately it's not the one you're looking for. The Iron Hammer is an article about a converted Iron Warriors Vindicator.

The 40k batrep in Issue 301 is Witch Hunters vs Space Wolves 13th Company.

#303, not #301 :smile.:

Do you need the list or anything else, or is the army picture enough to be getting on with? I don't know the rules on how much we're allowed to share on here.

Edit:

Oh, you can't view pictures? Then the list is:

Captain Ultor 'the Avenger' // Power Weapon, Storm Bolter

Terminator Squad 'Barak' // x5, Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer

Venerable Dreadnought 'Chiron' // Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer

Tactical Squad 'Nestor' // x5, Lascannon

Tactical Squad 'Alexis' // x5, Lascannon

Tactical Squad 'Rhoecus' // x7, Meltagun x2, veteran sergeant w/ Thunder Hammer

Rhino // extra armour

Devastator Squad 'Tullius' // x7, Multi-Melta x2

Rhino // extra armour

Predator Destructor 'Vulcan's Enforcer' // Autocannon, Lascannon sponsons

the take away is how small that force is...... you would be hard pressed to expand that list to 1000 points!

Kinda like a real elite army. Go figure. :P

Just for fun I copied that list with Primaris equivalents and it would make a nice ~1800p list (1x Primaris Captain, 3x5 Intercessors, 1x5 Aggressor Squad, 1x Redemptor Dread, 1x5 Hellblaster, 3x Repulsor).

Yeah, cannot be duplicated exactly, but you can get close with a few changes

Tactical Squad 'Rhoecus' needs to become a Sternguard Veteran Squad, only way to get two Melta-guns in a unit. The Vet Sergeant cannot have a Thunder hammer, but a Powerfist works well enough.

The Terminator Squad cannot have two heavy weapons in a 5man unit, so its either/or on the Heavy Flamer or Assault Cannon.

It runs about 1200, but you would need to add a third Troops choice and another Character to get a full Battalion out of it.

++ Battalion Detachment +5CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [89 PL, 1200pts] ++

**Chapter Selection**: Salamanders

+ HQ +

Captain Ultor Power sword, Storm bolter, Warlord

+ Troops +

Tactical Squad Nestor
. 3x Space Marine
. Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun/Bolt pistol
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon

Tactical Squad Alexis
. 3x Space Marine
. Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun/Bolt pistol
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon

+ Elites +

Sternguard Veteran Squad Rhoecus
. Space Marine Veteran: Special issue boltgun
. Space Marine Veteran: Special issue boltgun
. Space Marine Veteran: Special issue boltgun
. Space Marine Veteran: Special issue boltgun
. Space Marine Veteran w/Heavy Weapon: Meltagun
. Space Marine Veteran w/Heavy Weapon: Meltagun
. Veteran Sergeant: Boltgun, Power fist

Terminator Squad Barak
. Terminator Sergeant: Power sword, Storm bolter
. Terminator w/Heavy Weapon: Heavy flamer, Power fist
. 3x Terminator w/PF: 4x Power fist, 4x Storm bolter

Venerable Dreadnought Chiron Assault cannon
. Dreadnought combat weapon w/Heavy Flamer: Heavy flamer

+ Heavy Support +

Devastator Squad Tullius
. 4x Space Marine
. Space Marine Sergeant: Boltgun
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Multi-melta
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Multi-melta

Predator: Vulcan's Enforcer Predator autocannon, Two Lascannons

+ Dedicated Transport +

Rhino: Storm bolter

Rhino: Storm bolter

++ Total: [89 PL, 1200pts] ++

Adding a bare bones Lieutenant with a Powersword and Bolter, as well as another 5 man Tac squad with Heavy Bolter; brings it up to 1342. That gives you about 158 points to play with.

Just my thoughts... I was bored lol

i dont remember which white dwarf it was but the one where they followed people building an army specifically an Iron Warrior one really grabbed me into the hobby,.

Christian Byrne had an amazing Iron Warriors army in White Dwarf. The White Dwarf that grabbed me for WD248 the Armageddon campaign was so awesome to me - Blood Angels, Black Templars and Salamanders  I remember buying that magazine from GW Ipswich - the one that was inside Debenhams haha!

I actually have something pretty similar typed into Battlescribe myself!

Kinda like a real elite army. Go figure. :tongue.:

Still think that would be a better way to go. Not only does it use the new models, but I think its got better damage output and survivability. Add a PLT, and an PAncient, and a maybe a PLibrarian if there are points left

Thank you so much! Would you happen to have the iron Warriors side as well?

You're welcome! :happy.:

Christian Byrne had an amazing Iron Warriors army in White Dwarf.

This is Christian Byrne's army :) It featured in #294, #295, #296, #301 and #303 I believe. I must confess though I had more of a penchant for the IW army in the #289 battle report, that one was really neat.

If iirc that’s when IW where pretty much top tier?

My first proper 40k game was vs pretty much that army vs my basic Tau force. The guy said he’d teach me, claimed he was a great teacher and would walk me through the game. He turned up with this force and proceed to table me in 2 turns...

Dont remember the first issue of WD i convinced my mum to buy me, i wasn't that old, but it had a two page spread of Beakies in the original canon colour schemes from Rogue Trader

the next issue i remember is the original issue 106 from 1988, i remember the Dark Future article with the extra cars... damn im old

I remember going to that Games Workshop a few times many years back. I was pretty confused to it being in there!

The US version was Owen Rees Drop Regiment vs Orks :sad.:

After reading that report, two things came to the forefront:

1. I wanted an Elysian army

2. Owen plays DA very well. Drop infantry, not so much. I remember continually asking, "Why did you do that?"

I also recall the Ork player punishing him for all of his bad mistakes.

The White Dwarf that grabbed me for WD248 the Armageddon campaign was so awesome to me - Blood Angels, Black Templars and Salamanders

I love that battle report. I still take it out and read it from time to time. The whole linked battles concept was awesome and would still love to play in a game that big some day.

Regarding the original post...I don't recall ever seeing that batrep. I guess it didn't make it across the pond. Sounds like it would have been an interesting game.

Ah...the good ol' days. :)

oh good lord... I HATED playing 40k during this time... everything was MSU or wall to wall Chaos Basilisks...

At least now, there is a limit on special/ heavy weapons in 5 man units. I got so tired of the Las/Plas Tac squads in Las/Plas Razorbacks...

I really wish they hadnt done away with 10 man squads of RT/2e... MSU has been a bane on this game since 3rd... /sigh

Las/plas tacs and las/plas backs was definitely a 4E-5E thing I remember, but 3E brings back vivid memories of speeding red lunatics in a Rhino Rush wave.  Speedy Blood Angels and Khorne Berserker sorts.  -still looks at his own 20 strong chaos squads- I think I'm exempt as I was always a bit crazy for  numbers over any sort of MSU.

Still, this pretty cool to see.  I never collected mags but I remember skimming through a bunch of White Dwarf issues that they always had at our local GW at the front counter.  I don't think I've ever bought a White Dwarf, but I seem to recall the local GW tossed in the Canadian White Dwarf mags when you bought a squad box or more.

Man, those Iron Warriors are giving me all sorts of weird deja vu.  Thanks for the Nostalgia nudge, boss!  Man, points degradation was definitely a thing, eh?

I miss armies being smaller. The game feels too big normally now with too many things that imho don't belong in "regular" 40k.

Those lists were around 3rd edition, right (might be 4th, I forget when obliterators were updated)? How many points was the battle report actually? Going from memory back then it looks about the 1500 mark.

In my opinion, armies of the size shown were the best suited to normal 40k.

Thank you so much! Would you happen to have the iron Warriors side as well?
