The best Captain Smash is now a Black Templar?

With the Vigilus formation and the strats you can now make the best variant of this character, potentially.

Possibly 7 attacks if you activate the Strat, re rolling to wound, re-rolling charges, can give him the Shield Eternal, can have a 5+ FNP

I'm not seeing anyone mention this chap.

Better than a rampaging, death visioned, honour the chapter, artisan with the angels wing? Or, a complement:

Detachment 1: the loyal 32

Detachment 2: blood angels with slamguinius

Detachment 3: black Templar’s captain stabalot

That way, you don’t have multiple smash captains unable to be fully utilized each turn due to ‘once each phase’ strategum limitation.

Mmmmm, games Workshop sure does like to make soup. Might have to call them the broth-captains.

Not sure if re-rolling wound rolls and charge rolls beats the instant re-deployment, 3d6 charge, no-OW relic, +1 to wound rolls and the D4 hammer. 5+++ is clearly better than 6+++ re-rolling 1s tho, I give you that and Shield Eternal adds nice durability for sure.

If anything he's definitely the more durable Captain (best the BA Captain can do is a 5+++ re-rolling 1s on top of what generic Captains can have) with still a more than decent damage output.

OK so this got me thinking, what about a Blender Marshal .

Marshal with Teeth of Terra and Master Swordsman and "Suffer not the Unclean to Live" strategem activated. That is 4+d3+1+1 attacks (if you go Primaris captain that is another +1 attack)

So on average we are looking at 8 attacks, you are most likely going to to get 1 six so that becomes 9 hits. Add with Grimaldus and that could easily become 10 hits.

Then you can use honour the chapter to fight again so we are looking at 20 hits. Strength 5 so against most infantry that is wounding on 3s (with reroll to wounds). 14 initial wounds, reroll and wound with 4 more so 18 wounds in total.

Teeth of Terra is AP-2 and 2 damage. Thats 9 dead TEQ, 12 dead MEQ and 18 dead GEQ.

Now obviously I have done some napkin mathhammer but still that is a lot of killing potential.

The main downside I can see with this is that is costs 5CP to pull off. However, this is on a bare bones Marshell, thats 74pts!

Actually did the Teeth of Terra Captain backed up by Grimaldus. Had 7 attacks going in since I didn't use the strat that turn, ended up with 15 hits. It can be quite mean if used correctly, and if he somehow dies you can use 2CP to go again as well.

Okay what "smash captain" are we talking about here? If its the new blade master warlord trait + thunder hammer, I think the name should be Captain Death-hammer. If its using the Teeth of Terra, Captain Death-Saw.

The new strategems made BT Marshalls decent.

But non-OW and 3+ to wound a knight made BA captain a hard counter to super-heavies, that is a special tactic role.

4+ reroll failed wounds is better than a flat 3+. Slamguinius has a D4 hammer though, whereas ours only does D3.

D4?

Damage 4

I think that if the Marshal has a Thunder hammer then it should be Slamismund.

If it is a Teeth of Terra then I would vote Slashalot. I feel like Slashalot sounds pretty close to Lancelot.

Surely you can run both?

Yes but our Marhsal gets two hits on a 6, which could make a big difference

Not much to add except if I'm seeing more Black Templars on the table then I'm a happy camper.

Personally I'm missing the gothic zealotry absent from 40K Marines now a days and I can't condone Dark Angels so that means Templars should be the poster boys.

(The Overfiend clearly thought so too as 3rd edition was all about Templars even on the box art of the game)
