The best Captain Smash is now a Black Templar?

The new strategems made BT Marshalls decent.

But non-OW and 3+ to wound a knight made BA captain a hard counter to super-heavies, that is a special tactic role.

4+ reroll failed wounds is better than a flat 3+. Slamguinius has a D4 hammer though, whereas ours only does D3.

Yes but our Marhsal gets two hits on a 6, which could make a big difference

Can't roll a 6 when you've got a Thunder Hammer.

I believe it’s UNMODIFIED rolls of a 6 with our WLT my good man.

It's unmodified 6s :)

D4?

Damage 4

I think that if the Marshal has a Thunder hammer then it should be Slamismund.

If it is a Teeth of Terra then I would vote Slashalot. I feel like Slashalot sounds pretty close to Lancelot.

Surely you can run both?

Thanks :)

So I tested out "Marshal Law" tonight. Ran him bare bones with bolt pistol and Teeth of Terra. I wanted to see how the cheapest loadout would work, use that as a baseline and then see if he needed a few points spent on him to up his killing power.

Well all I can say is the guy is an absolute blender! I ran him in my Black Tide and used a couple of crusader squads as a screen/delivery system. I faced against our rivals the Blood Angels. He cut down 5 Death Company, 5 Assualt Marines and about 10 tacticals. He must have killed more than 300pts. I only got to use the Sword Brother Stratagem 2 times out of 4 combats. So even without the extra attack and reroll wound Marshal Law can do work. I found the biggest thing was I was getting 1-2 sixes each time I swung, which meant I was getting 8-9 hits each time I attacked.

I am going to find a way to get him along side Grimaldus in my list and turn him into a woodchipper!

Also remember to buy a Combat Shield rather than a Storm Shield if you're going to be using the Shield Eternal. Saves you 6 points.

You can't take a combat shield on a captain

Derp. Guess I should've looked harder before posting.

So I've been thinking about this and trying to figure out how to get the most out of this warlord trait. So I math hammered it out.

He will have 6 attacks base if we use Suffer Not, one of which will explode on average. If he takes the ToT or a Relic blade then he basically just re-rolls to hit as he hits on a 2+ and re-rolls ones.  However if he takes a TH, it gets tricky. He re-rolls 1's, but any 2's become 1's after he re-rolls. So effectively we can math it out as if he hits on 3's re-rolling 1's. Any D3 dice we have should average 2 because a D6 average is 3.5.

MEQ w/ 1-2 wounds

Relic Blade

6 Attacks = 5.833 Hits (+1) = 6.07 Wounds = 5.06 Dead

Teeth of Terra

6 Attacks (+2) = 7.78 Hits (+1.33) = 8.1 Wounds = 5.4 Dead

Thunder Hammer

6 Attacks = 4.667 Hits (+1) = 5.51 Wounds = 4.59 Dead

T5 MEQ with 1-2 wounds

Relic Blade

6 Attacks = 5.833 Hits (+1) = 6.07 Wounds = 5.06 Dead

Teeth of Terra

6 Attacks (+2) = 7.78 Hits (+1.33) = 6.83 Wounds = 4.55 Dead

Thunder Hammer

6 Attacks = 4.667 Hits (+1) = 5.04 Wounds = 4.2 Dead

So obviously the Relic Blade and ToT are pretty close to even here especially if you are targeting infantry. Though the Relic blade does have higher damage potential because it'd D3 so could in theory be better against characters or units with 3+ wounds. The TH seems like the big loser until you consider that killing infantry isn't why you are taking it, you are going after high toughness units where the extra strength and static 3 damage will crush your targets.

So the next question is what else to bring with these weapons? I think if you are going big game hunting with a TH you want the Shield Eternal to reduce your incoming damage and keep swinging for longer, but I'm not sure what to give the other two. The MC boltgun is pretty solid at AP-1 and 2 damage, but is there something better?

If you include the Thunderhammer then you should also do the math against multi-wound targets like characters and vehicles since that's where the D3 starts to shine (regular Thunderhammers have D3, not D1d6 ;) ).

Also keep in mind that if you take the Relic Blade or Thunderhammer you are free to give him a different relic or just give someone else a relic and maybe save a CP.
