Good UM book for my son

Thanks for consulting with us, Brother.  I think the "safe" choice is the 1st story of Crusade and Other Stories, the 1st story being Crusade by Andy Clark.

It is a compilation of a number of 40k stories to introduce new players to 40k, and that's exactly why I recommend it as a "safe" choice.  The opening story was designed to be an overview.  It even has an Ultramarine explaining that the Death Guard worships a god of disease.  Too obvious for us, but I think it's absolutely ideal for a new player or young reader, as everything's clear.

Now, even for me, as someone who grew up with 40k, I love this story because it literally hits so many tropes of 40k that it's hilarious.  It hits all the markers.

The added benefit is that there's like a dozen short stories after it, about half of them are really quite good that I think you too may enjoy as a 40k fan.  And I feel if your son sees you reading the same book he does, he'll feel really smart and motivated to read more.

Actually I remember the very first Ventris novel, Nightbringer, has torture and sex in it. Not saying there's anything wrong these books but caution advised.

I'm going to stick to the kids specific novels GW seem to be producing. It's surprising what things you miss or gloss over regarding 40K novels.

Amusing anecdote - once on this very forum I mentioned a scene in False Gods where a Davinite is sacrificed to all 8 of the ruinous powers - betrayed (Tzeetch), blood spilt (Khorne), then the corpse "desecrated by a diseased goat (Nurgle and Slaanesh).

Most people missed it and questioned it!

Alternate take: playing 40k is a time consuming hobby already, how much more time do you want to spend with stuff revolving around 40k?

Your kid actually wants to read. That's good. Give him a book of any of your countries great poets and have him read that. Right now, his mind is still open to stuff like that.

Ask him again in 5 years to read something that doesn't come waving the flag of something else than literature and he might just laugh.

Heck, Shelley, Keats, Schiller, Poe, those guys wrote some great stuff.

But that scene with the diseased goat bothers you? Yeah, you haven't read Schiller yet, mate.

And what's gore and nudity in the age of Game of Thrones anyway?

Good stories can have all the unnecessary gore they want in them, as long as they don't revolve around it. If they move above that, that's when you have a good book. If it then drops the gore, all the better.

Now that that's said, I find the Character of Ventris to be an actually interesting one, but do you pick up on that at the age of 10 when Episodes I-III still seem superior to IV-VI?

Go with that for a proper book or, if it's just about delving into the fluff, the kiddo offerings GW has coughed up this year. They're a hook for new players, so the gotta be good ;)

Cheers folks, he likes 40k and I figured extra reading over and above school related reading would be a bonus.

I might grab a couple of the books and read them over first, then if suitable ask him if he wants to read them also.

Appreciate the responses, and thanks to the mod who altered the typo in my heading. I'm on holiday currently and using the mobile.

Cheers and happy new year
