Legions display project

Well I'm back. I thought I was out of this hobby and then I discovered the Horus Hersey series had dropped on audible. Then curiosity got me to B+C where I discovered all my old posts were lost in the warp. No worries. Time to start new anyway.

The HH re-lit the fire, so I present to you my first project, which I need a little guidance with:

http://arran.design/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_20190109_231208-e1547076730821.jpg

These are just "standard" legionary using just the MK.III and Mk.IV plastic kits, converting using green stuff and one or two spare parts I dug out of the attic.

There are no forge world kits in this, so all shoulder pads are either caved by me (i'm so out of practice) or free hand painted by me (even more out of practice).

I wish I'd had a few more pistols in the kit as some of them are single handing full sized bolters.

I'll add close ups later, though I hope I've managed to capture the flavour of each legion in some way without any major canonical issues, it took alot of digging through various sources to figure out colour schemes and armour styles of each legion.

So I was planning on basing these on this block of wood roughly laid out in this format, with a bit of elevation at the rear. The idea being that the left would be the traitor factions and the right would be loyalist legions.

I also wanted to place each legion opposite what I consider their greatest rivals if possible, the problem being I haven't got to the end of the series yet (up to book 15), so I don't know how it all plays out. I need your help to position the others.

I know that its not as simple Legion X hates Legion Y specifically, but there are a few key events that make it clear there are rivalries between some legions that run to their core.

Iron Warriors -> Imperial fists (they keep kicking each other sand castles down)

Emperors Children -> Iron Hands (Daddy lost his head)

Word bearers -> Ultramarines (humiliated by big E and Guiliman)

Thousand sons -> Space woles (Prospero)

Sons of Horus -> Blood Angels (Horus killing sanguinius)

Alpha Legion and Dark Angels I wanted to put on the centre line due to their alignments being a bit grey/split. I know AL has many fan theories around their loyalty however I think alot of them carry weight.

Do these match ups make sense? The rest I don't know where to position.

Side note:

Legion and a thousand sons were my two favourite books so far and I may end up modelling and painting up a small force of each in future, I also enjoyed modelling them the most.

TLDR: Which legions should I pair up with their opposing number on my display board?

Your dudes look really good from what I can see - maybe some close-ups would be in order?

I’d suggest that in terms of pairings, the following would make some sense:

Salamanders vs Death Guard

Raven Guard vs Night Lords

White Scars vs World Eaters, I guess...

Dark Angels<->Night Lords - Thramas

White Scars<->World Eaters - No Named Battles

Space Wolves<->Thousand Sons - Prospero

Imperial Fists<->Iron Warriors - Phall

Blood Angels<->Sons of Horus - Terra

Iron Hands<->Emperor's Children - Isstvan V

Ultramarines<->Word Bearers - Calth

Salamanders<->Death Guard - Isstvan V

Raven Guard<->Alpha Legion - No Named Battles

Well, the White Scars and World Eaters kinda fill the role of outsiders or rebels, in that their Primarchs never (truly) recognised the Emperor as their leader/father. So while not the most obvious match, it makes some sense. Plus, both had white Pre-Heresy schemes (which does not really have anything to do, but it is curious now that I've thought about it, as black is the colour that represents the Emperor post-30K).

As promised, close ups.

III Legion

One of the last minis I did, so a bit more effort went into the freehand once I got my eye in. Its not perfect but its a start.

IV Legion

A little bit of a hickup with some old gloss varnish creating a bit of clouding on the stripey parts. I may try to rectify this later.

My super crude first attempt at freehand. I may return to this.

They look great! And I agree with Vykes. The World Eaters were sent to hunt down the Raven Guard on Isstvan V after the big battle, and there were a few Blood Angels on Molech when the Sons of Horus arrived.

The novel Scars doesn’t pit the Alpha Legion against the White Scars in open ground combat, but Malevolence reportedly will.

I've got this project nearly entirely wrapped up now, just a few touch ups. A bit more ambitious then my original intent.

The background. This is the first "traditional" style painting I think I've done since school.

Great stuff all round, really like the concept, I also like what you did with the floor for WE and DG, how about lava crackle for the Sallie? For the backdrop, how about a flyer of sorts?

Both excelent ideas and I will deffiently be looking into both. I was originally going to do similar with each mini (and still may). Shattered glass for prospero under SW and TS. But its limited in space and  I didn't want to lose too much focus from the minis with background noise. Also some legions I couldn't come up with a "thing".

Nightlords a pileo of skulls maybe? Emperors children a field of ****?
