Azekai
Howdy folks, I am a mono-Nurgle player, always have been. I am somewhat unhappy with the treatment the Great Unclean One has gotten this edition. I sorely miss having a 4++ (even the crummy flavorless generic greater daemons in the 4th ed dex had that, for Gods'sakes). Investing 300+ points in a giant model just to have it focused and killed is pretty lame-However, I own a couple of the old metal GUO models and I realized part of the problem with the modern incarnation isn't just its high cost/low impact, it's also the size of the thing. Anyone and anything can draw LoS to the lumbering gribbly. My midget unclean ones are way easier to hide, and with some 'standard' blocking terrain like shipping containers they are not difficult to conceal. This could be done with Keepers of Secrets too, I imagine, since they also lack the billowing wings of the Lord of Change or Bloodthirster. Some people might cry foul but they aren't in my circle. Besides, my GUO are legal Gee-dubs miniatures and I don't feel like I need to buy a half-ton of overwrought plastic just so my daemons can be killed easier by knights. :PAnyone else still use their vintage GUO? Charlo
This is one of those weird circumstances where while not technically illegal - don't be that guy... Panzer
Yeah thinking like that goes deep into the modeling for advantage area. Nobody can or should force you to buy a new version of a model when you already have the old one but playing with the old one just because it gives you an unfair advantage in the game is just ugly. About the Keeper of Secrets, that's a different matter since there is no updated KoS model and he still has his old stats (hence why he also costs a lot less than the other three). Gederas
Yeah, that's straight-up modelling for advantage. Like, you're not being "That Guy" because you're bringing a cheese tournament list to a casual game, but you ARE being That Guy for using blatant abuse of the "you don't need to use the most current models" thing by using a drastically smaller model because its advantageous to you. Look, I brought Mortarion in a 1k game (then again, my opponent specifically asked because I finished him and he only had 1k of Blood Angels....), and I'M saying you're looking like a jerk by doing that. DeStinyFiSh
GuO have the asame issue than every other greater daemon. They are vulnerable to shooting. CA helped, but not completely. However, I too think to play a smaller model just to get an advantage is wrong. In may gaming group, if someone has an alternative model that is smaller than the GW one we count it as being bigger. Thats how GW intendet it, that is how we play. Azekai
I am not ‘modeling for advantage.’ GUO suck and I am not buying a new one. I am sticking with my old ones and as a side benefit they are more survivable. Sue me. Azekai
Also, the size bloat is unreal. What GW intends is to sell giant expensive models. That’s what they did with beasts of Nurgle and they did the same thing with the GUO. Upsized the models to upsize the price of the kit. It has nothing to do with game balance or improving the quality of 40k Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353221-kinda-cheesy-way-to-use-the-guo/#findComment-5237388 Share on other sites
Panzer
You said yourself it's cheesy in the title. Don't get mad when people agree with you that it's not a cool thing to do. Azekai
You are supposed to tell me I am clever, dammit! In all seriousness, you are right Panzer, but l like my old models and was happy to find a case where my frog-shaped paperweights might actually be usable. All my plague marines are 3rd ed (or 2nd) and my poxwalkers are old fantasy zombies... used em as summoned daemons back in the day. My armies tend to be shorter than the new stuff... The scale creep is just excacerbated with the GUO. It isn’t like I ran out and got some eBay specials just to be a jerk. To your point about the rules update reflecting the changed size, I actually agree about that. the one time I used my GUO this edition I used the index rules. It likely would be inappropriate to use the new stats. Charlo
If you like the old one, buy a bigger base and build him up with ruins/ rubble/ plague/ diseases so he's a size resembling the new one then ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353221-kinda-cheesy-way-to-use-the-guo/#findComment-5237444 Share on other sites

Bzzark
Why would you want to hide the GUO? Every shot targeting the GUO, means your units that can actually win you the game are not being targeted. The club I play at have worked this out unfortunately. I have been running Rotigus in all games recently and he rarely takes damage these days, it's all reserved for my poor rot flies. To be fair in a pure daemon army a greater daemon is often then only good target for your opponents anti-tank weapons. It would be better for you if he had to shoot his Lascannons&Co at Plaguebearers or Nurglings instead. Rot flies can get dealed with anti-infantry weapons like Assault Cannons etc as well. Bzzark
That should be the theory, but my opponents use anti tank and the rest of their shooting to target my large units of flies and beasts knowing that the GUO has minimal impact on a game.
