Starting New

Hey all

I'm thinking about starting a Deathwatch army and I have £80 and the opportunity to get the interdiction primaris bundle from xmas. Is that the wisest/funnest way to start? Or am I better getting a start collecting Deathwatch + X?

I'm not completely for or against primaris, but i'm probably looking to end with a mono army rather than mix of primaris and marines classic. From that POV the Deathwatch aesthetic is represented better from old marines, right?

The start collecting box is a very good place to start. Veterans and dreadnoughts are both powerful units.

I recommend investing the extra money in two start collecting boxes. Gives you a battalion, made of Artemis, 4 units of vet’s, 2 dreads and then convert a captain from the second Artemis model.

Food for thought :)

I agree with IronDreddKnight, two Start Collecting will give you a battalion with fun extra bits, but it wont work if you want a Primaris army. Right now you will have more options to build your army with the older marines but do realise you have to buy a load of upgrade sprues with the Primaris box set, they cost around £8 each and contain 10 normal pads and 3 heavy pads.

With the start collecting you'll get 4x minimum troop squads with Necron swords, Frag Cannons and a Combi-weapon per other squad. Two Venerable Dreadnoughts which are good with the Las-cannons or Assault Cannons. Finally you'll get 2x Captain Artemis which you can alter the second one to a normal captain with bits from the troop sprues.

With the Primaris you'll be missing an extra captain and one troops to get a Battalion. You do get the Transport/Tank and some meh Elites and fun Fast attack. Remember again you need shoulder pads.

If you want to get down and play, the Start Collecting is the way to go at that price tag(Buy x2 at an online shop for £80). If you want to go the Primaris route you will need to invest more into finishing it off.

Personally, I really like the Primaris marines for Deathwatch, though the standard vets are technically "better" due to their ability to take Stormbolters & Storm Shields and other war-gear options that the Primaris units don't have access to.

I'd say if you like the look of the Primaris, go for the Primaris box, they're pretty tough with 2 wounds and their bolt rifles are good, especially with the new beta rule "Bolter Discipline" (Which will also benefit storm bolters on vets too). However, you're going to need another HQ, another box of Primaris Intercessors to fill the requirements of a Battalion.

Also, the Repulsor is extremely expensive points wise for what it brings and our Teleportium stratagem allows for us to have an effective foot slogging army. The Interdiction force also comes with Reavers which aren't as useful as some of the other Primaris units available. The Inceptors are good to add to your Intercessor squads to all them to fallback & shoot.

IMO, If you're going to go with a Primaris battle-force, I'd pick up the IF version instead, it comes with hellblasters & aggressors, which are very good units to take with your Fortis (Primaris) kill teams, and it comes with a Redemptor Dreadnought, which is a pretty gnarly unit too. You'll still need another HQ and another box of Intercessors though for a Battalion putting your total cost @ £157.50 if you buy another Primaris Capt as your 2nd HQ.

If you're after a more traditional spec-ops feel to your Deathwatch, I'd say got with the vets as the others have suggested. If your budget is  £80, you can still get a battalion force with 1x Start Collecting: Deathwatch, 1x Deathwatch Kill Team Box & 1x Watch Master - it comes in a little over budget @  £87, but I'll fill the basic requirements for a Battalion. If you can exceed your budget more, I'd go with the 2x Start Collecting: Deathwatch boxes as suggested.

Either way you go, The Deathwatch is a really fun army to play. Hope that helped, and welcome to the watch! =][=

Great advice here. The only thing I’d add is please don’t restrict yourself to a specific troop type. There’s a lot of fun and exploring to be had with both Primaris and Veteran marines, and that’s a large part of what makes the army fun, and challenging to play.

I am currently working on 2 Venerable Dreadnoughts that I built using 1 Venerable box and one standard box. This got me 1 Missile Las and one Plasma Cannon and CCW Dreadnought. I miss the Forge world Dreadnought weapons.

I did the same thing. I bought a Venerable Dreadnought Kit and a standard Dreadnought kit and used the extra pieces from the Venerable kit to make the standard kit into a Venerable, so now I have a TLLC + ML Venerable dreadnought and a PC/AC + DCCW venerable dreadnought.

I've also seen some conversions with the DCCW arm and the Deathwind ML from the drop pod kit.
