So, I recently purchased a third party “Lion Knight” to act as the base of a Lion El’Jonson piece

Idea is to use the 40k Roboute for his helm and backpack, as well as the Totally Not Rebranded Vets Fallen box to wack in appropriate iconography and wings for the Lion Helm. Having obtained appropriate robed dudes, the creative juices got flowing again.

And now comes the rub. Getting wings for the helms is a managable issue, but lion heads for the backpack vents? That seems to be less fruitful. I’m looking to recreate the feel of this image as faithfully as possible, but the market seems sparse on appropriate bits. Any pointers would be much appreciated, and as/when Lion and his Guard get started I’ll turn this into a standard ‘blog’ style thread with model updates!

I don't know if this is feasible, but you might look for smaller scale lion figures (toys) that you can decapitate. If you are willing to try your hand at casting, you'll only need one dead lion. It would have to be a pretty small lion figure (not sure how many of those there are).

Various Chaos marines over the years have had bestial maws for gun barrels. The Chaos Land raider comes to mind. Maybe use those and sculpt a mane?

I have to say that's by far the best third-party primarch substitute that I've seen. Nice find.

You could do worse than look for jewellery findings or charms. Etsy has a selection of little pewter lions that might work nicely.

Most seem to be on the large end at 12x8mm upwards for vents, but might work better as pads if I can hollow them, not a bad shout.

Thanks, it’s the Lion Knight from Kabuki Studios’ Knights of Legend range as part of a resculpt of an earlier collectors set. A little hard to come by the limited edition versions as only 250 were made, but well worth if you can grab one.

And now the lion has been kit bashed together!

Overall I'm pleased with how the cast came out. Required less cleanup than many GW models, and it's not too brittle nor too soft. I changed the wings that come with the helm and added Roboute's backpack and base to really tie this into the 40k universe. Next step is going to be painting!

Thoughts?

Initial colouring has started. It's a bit of a labour of love thus far, still playing around and lots and lots of detailing/highlighting to be done, this is like maybe 30% finished if that.

No custom rules as of yet, just building and painting to have some kind of Lion in the collection.

I’m having trouble making the green stand out enough on the black. I wanted to keep it 30k legion colours, but went with 40K green wing accents to try and tie my Lion to both schemes. Any suggestions on how to make it pop out, or should I ditch the idea all together?

Apologies for the lack of updates, a recent move from London to the east coast of Scotland has kept me thoroughly tied up!

Not much to report back on other than the Lion going from having green wings to red wings, but I have started on something else...

Amended the title of the thread now that this is a generic blog style. I’m debating between using the Legion MkIII backpacks on the Lion Guard command squad or using the more icon plastered ‘modern’ looking backpacks from the Veterans box set. Each have their virtues and issues and each have been used effectively in 30k and cross over 40k armies, thoughts?

Apologies for the lack of updates but my pace makes glacial movement seem quick in comparison, and I’m having issues finding a reliable way to take photos with my iphone and host them. Glorious Overlord Apple really likes to make it tricky to figure out how to get photos off of a phone and onto a pc without going through its annoying itunes service!

Anyway, I have painted up the Chapter/Legion Standard Bearer and the Praetorian/Consol with plasma pistol and started work with the Terminator Praetorian after a stream fan of mine sent a spare he had!

Pictures will follow once I’m done with a trip to London to see my own Dark Angels Neophyte

I've found using train modelling scenery products has sped up my basing and makes them look great with GW static grass breaking up the borders.

So, I've played around with contrast paints on some parts of the models and been impressed in areas, disappointed in others. My skill is lacking compared to some venerable folk on these forums, but I'm glad to have finally started to get things into tabletop condition at the least. It's been a lot of fun, now to find time to finish my Lion Guard!
