Kona
Spent a lot of time painting this guy today, mostly fixing mistakes. Pretty happy with it, just wanted to share it. Edit-Forgot to post pic. brother_b
He's great. That's exactly the paint scheme I'm considering for my guard. Dark grey fatigues with black armor and gear. I'll use red or orange for spot colors. Great job. Only 119 more to paint right? HallofStovokor
Truly, this is a guardsman worthy of carrying the mighty lasgun. WarriorFish
Every journey starts with a single step ;) I wouldn't have known it was 20 years if you hadn't said, he is ready for the table top... well, once he gets some friends :P Keep us updated on the rest :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353576-1st-painted-miniature-in-20-years-many-to-go/#findComment-5247569 Share on other sites
Kona
Thank you all. I did make it pretty easy on myself. Used color primer, so I didn't have to paint the uniform, and I dry brushed everything. WarriorFish
Such efficiency is a good thing, especially for horde armies  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353576-1st-painted-miniature-in-20-years-many-to-go/#findComment-5247970 Share on other sites
Lord Raven 19
Very nice, any idea what world he is from yet. He doesn't have to be cadian. Kona
Thank you. Got four more almost done, a squad 50% put together, and a ton in boxes. It's hard to find time with a one and two year old and their wave of destruction. But I'll find a way. Part of me thinks I should of done space marines or imperial knights with my time constraints but I really like tanks. duz_
Minimum battalion of of guard (32 Models) + a Vigilus Spearhead detachment of Leman Russes and Hellhounds would actually be a decent army ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353576-1st-painted-miniature-in-20-years-many-to-go/#findComment-5248688 Share on other sites

Part of me thinks I should of done space marines or imperial knights with my time constraints but I really like tanks. I wouldn't worry too much. You can think about possible army compositions while you build your troops. Does your store meta favor an infantry based build, a tank centric build, an artillery heavy army, or a good mix of everything? What type of build best fits your playstyle? When I first got back into the hobby, it took me a couple months before I had built up 2000 points. During that time, I got a feel for what things worked with my playstyle and what didn't work too well. I suggest a similar approach. Guard, at a glance, appear to be the most straightforward army in the game. That's mostly true, but each regiment has its quirks. Cadians and Catachan both synergize well with artillery and tanks, but are played very differently (offensive v. defensive). Tallarn are a very mobile regiment and can kite your opponents. Vostroyans have increased range. Valhallans suffer significantly less from morale and damage to vehicles. Mordians have good morale and like to clump up. These can make unit composition complicated Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353576-1st-painted-miniature-in-20-years-many-to-go/#findComment-5248710 Share on other sites
Kona
I appreciate all the suggestions. I bought a bunch of stuff over the last few years. Got some chimeras, couple hydras, a few leman russes, a valkyrie, some scions, bunch of squads, and a knight gallant. Bought some for purpose and some I just liked the models. Figured I'd put it together, paint it, and go from there. I may try to trade someone the knight for a baneblade. My main focus is getting some paint on some troops. This site has helped a lot. I'm building my squad boxes with both sergeants, launchers, voxes, and flame throwers. Filling them out with the 5 man boxes. Looking into converting some of the lasguns from the squads to plasma/melta guns. After that magnetizing the vehicles. I have so much to do. Shamansky
Love the 'black metal' texture on Lasgun, and armour. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353576-1st-painted-miniature-in-20-years-many-to-go/#findComment-5248934 Share on other sites
FlamingDeth
I don't know if it was intentional but the metal on the weapon casings and armor remind me of cast iron. Maybe they can run Catachan tactics because gear that heavy is bound to give them an extra pip of strength! Just kidding, I'm sure it's some kind of crazy future metal instead, the thought was just amusing to me. Also, the cloth is fantastic, there's a good amount of depth in the folds. Kona
I also really like how the black metal came out, going for a weathered black armor. Need to clean up the dry brush work between the shoes and shin plates, they have different highlight colors. May give both metal colors another wash, was hoping for a dirtier looking brass. I never really noticed the cloth, thank you. Â All the positive feedback has really got me pumped to paint some more. I'll continue to post updates. C&C and suggestions are totally welcome.
