The four armed emperor has enticed me...

Where do I begin?

Been sold by the ridiculous models and cool concept. I've come looking for advice. I know it's early days for the codex, but I picked up the battleforce (that for some reason is still on sail). but once they're built and painted, where do I go next? What do you expect armies to play like? Fill with Abarrants? Loads of genestealers? Leman Russes? What do you all think?

I'd wait for the codex to be released. A lot about this codex will depend upon the points cost for things and how exactly the minutiae of the rules work.

Personally, I go with rule of cool, which means that metamorphs, acolytes and aberrants will rub shoulders with lots of characters and AM stuff, but relatively few vehicles. No idea if it will be competitive, but I'll be playing MY army, which is why i do this :)

At a guess:

Characters - cool rules but probably rather expensive and glass hammers with the exception of the patriarch

Aberrants - hit like a freight train but massively expensive

Metamorphs - hit like a slightly smaller freight train but again rather expensive and will die to pretty much any weapon fired at them.

Acolytes - hordy and cheap, but really really easy to kill

Leman Russ - Hard to go wrong with these guys whatever you do

AM Defectors / Indoctrinated folks - All the advantages of AM but with a few additional drawbacks (no really really flashy stuff and did I read somewhere that it only generates half CP?)

Ultimately, I would go with what YOU want to do, but wait to read the codex first :)

I think some choices are still solid even in a new codex - squad of genestealers is a good idea or some heavy support leman russ. With so many new heroes coming out and new cult doctrines there should be a couple of viable ways to play GC. Aberrants will be solid choice for a killy squad for sure. Clamavus is a good choice for buffing charges and Nexos to generate those tasty CP.

Since its a hordish army you'll need a bit more acolyte and neophyte guys. There is still a way to get Acolytes fairly cheap from Overkill set from ebay or so on.

As for the rules there are a couple of reviews online of the new codex... I wouldnt take word for word what people say is great or meh but you can get ideas how new heroes and cult rules work!

Uncertain at the moment, but probably not. It seems that there is a restriction to units from the AM dex that can take the <REGIMENT> or <MINISTORUM> keywords and ogryns lack this. I'll reserve final judgement until the release and dex are well known, but it seems unlikely.

From what I've seen on battle reports and reviews of the new codex, it seems that horde tactics is the way to go. GSC units are very fragile so redundancy is the key here. Their melee units hit hard but they are kind of similar to each other, so pick whatever is the most flavorful/fun for you. I agree with Toomanyprojects, Aberrants seem expensive. Shooty stuff looks underwhelming, especially all the Guard units, because they don't have any synergies from their own codex or from the Cult, but probably someone finds a build that's effective and spams mortars, or something...

Speaking of allies, I think Tyranid Kronos gunline would be pretty interesting. I'd say it's also thematic that Tyranid overlords would send their cultist cannon fodder straight at the enemy while themselves would sit back and send dakka at the brawl.

I recommend people to check out Geoff "iNControL" Robinson's review of the codex. It has some nice insights and some tactics brewing.

I've dusted off my cult from overkill, tooth and claw and space hulk 'stealers to start painting while waiting for the codex to drop; still 99% on sprues. I really like the Rusted Claw scheme which I painted some test models with, but I waited to see whether the trait sucked before going further. It seems decent, so that's what I'm sticking with. Thinking brood brothers guard allies rather than 'nids, simply as that's what I already have - there's a box of praetorians in the loft I never got round to painting...

Rusted claw in particular boosts bikes, so I'm definitely going to be taking at least a couple of squads of those. I think they might prove to be nice demo charges deliverers, particularly if they remain 'assault' weapons. The theme then fits a fairly mechanised force with some additional underground shenanigans.

A blob of purestrains underground with a clamavus seems a must, with a hammer squad of abberants for tank/knight. We do need to have half the army in points and units deployed at the start though, so that does mean quite a few units to start on the table. So leman russes and heavy weapon teams with officers brood brothers (either in the GSC detachment or IG detachment depending upon the exact rules) for some long range fire, with neophyte screens. Clearing screens for my underground attackers I think will be important for these guys.

Then acolytes in goliath, ridgerunner and sentinels are all options for fast moving firepower; I'll see what the final rules are to decide on those, I've got plenty to paint before I get there! And there's always some options like plasma scions dropping in, valkyrie full of ogryns etc if rules allow.
