Kastelan robot protocol question

Hello! I have come to the realization I may have been using my Kastelan protocols incorrectly. I reread that they automatically start in Aegis when deployed. So, if I do not have a Cybernetic Datasmith in my army, does that mean I can only change their protocol once with Binaric Overrirde? I had been setting them up in the shooty protocol. Thanks for the help!

You can change protocols in 2 ways:

Pay (waste) points on a datasmith, wait one turn, and fail 1/6 times (and thus pay 1cp to retry).

Waste 0 pts, pay 1 cp and change exactly when you need it, at 100% success rate.

There is no argument about which way is the good one. The other one is simply useless. As is the relic which goes with it.
