Age of Darkness FAQ

As I said in the N&R post:

A step in the right direction, but there are some bizarre omissions. Rampagers, Abaddon (etc), various units that have been bad for 7+ years would have seemed a higher priority to me than giving Dorn the ability to teleport.

Overall though this is a very positive change and one I hope they will build on.

To add to that, it is great to see Destroyers finally receive the buff the models deserved.

Are Headhunters scary yet?

Preferred enemy infantry has to help with those banestrike combibolters and power daggers.

Seconded. I'm not sure they are good enough as a special unit to justify the cost and the fact that Seekers are better in every way and Veterans aren't that much worse for far fewer points.

Shame the Alpha Legion stuff seems to have been cut from Malevolence, I would have loved to have seen some changes.

I guess it would be nice if you took combi-weapons on them. Combi-plasma with preferred enemy would be quite nice. Still a problem of too many points though...both as a start and the upgrades...

That becomes quite redundant then when you take Alpharius as he gives Preferred Enemy: Everything right? Headunter Leviathal would be obsolete.

Indeed, alpharius and headhunters don't mix...for some reason. Would be nice if they had a list of special rules to choose from like vets...

It just seems so nonsensical and half arsed. If thunderblitzing is somehow a problem Only for one of the cheap superheavies why not remove the specific problem rather than throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

It's probably a strong case of "oh, didn't think of that..." :biggrin.:

Which begs the question, why put a half baked idea into an FAQ?

But it was also because it was a cheap way to suicide bomb your enemies by driving it into their lines and getting it to explode for the S:D titanic explosion.

So fix the catastrophic table? You can still load up on "cheap" minotaurs or groups of smaller Low, I just can't imagine this was a common enough problem to effectively eliminate the tank from the game...

It's just so idiotic, I'm just glad there is some widespread dislike for it, I'm pretty sure they could break pretty much any thing and still get applause.

Preach

Question about the new palatine blades profile: Are power Lances even a thing in the Heresy? Are they the same as the 7th edition profile?

Yes to both; go for the Spears, Power Sword or Charnabals, they are usually more versatile options.

Per the new wording of Chain Fire:

  • When attacking with Pistol weapons in the controlling player’s Shooting phase, the Moritat may declare a Chain Fire attack instead of making their normal shooting attacks. While making a Chain Fire attack, a Moritat may roll To Hit six times each with up to two Pistol type weapons in the current Shooting phase.
  • Chain Fire attacks’ To Hit rolls may never be re-rolled, and weapons which do not roll To Hit may not make Chain Fire attacks. When making a Chain Fire attack for weapons with the Gets Hot or Melta special rules, roll each hit individually; if a 1 is rolled, stop rolling To Hit for that weapon immediately. No further To Hit rolls may be made with that weapon for the remainder of the phase.
  • After making a Chain Fire attack, a Moritat may not declare a Charge in the following Assault phase.

I havent seen it mentioned at all yet but it looks like a Moritat can now Chain Fire every turn instead of every other turn as was previously the case.

So its basically up to 12 pistol shots a turn from one of these boys now.

It does, but it's a short term fix (Thunderblitz) rather than a long term change. Yes, it sucks for now but the outcry has been box so I can see Anuj and the team getting straight to it. That and remember that its only really two people writing the FAQ, and they're only human.

I wonder if the removal of the choom pistol upgrade for Destroyers is for any other reason that they no longer sell the pistols outside of the MKII/MKIII upgrade kits

I don't remember ever having volkite serpenta sets available through FW, were they released at some point? I always thought they were only available through the upgrade kits you mentioned, which made them a difficult bit to amass.

Apparently they didn't sell them, but it's not like FW ever released all their wargear options, it's odd that they did remove them from a unit that would make good use of them fluff wise

Destroyers point reduction is nice, and Hardened Armour makes sense (because of model and background) but I thought they were going to give them new weapons (phosphex missiles, acid shells, irrad, etc...).

that might come in Malevolence, I don't see FW releasing new rules in full for a unit in the FAQ when they *might* be in the next book with more options.

Now i wonder if the removal of the choom pistols is to make the BA special destroyers more special, kinda a bad way to do it tbh, make us (BA's) more unique by removing options from everyone else

While this information is old now (could even be the '18 weekender) but Destoryers were talked about as a known problem unit and not reflective of the fluff or how they should perform in game. BAs were noted as getting a unique Destroyer unit at this point and that their one would almost be "the template" for an updated generic unit to follow, obviously without the BA flair. However it was also said that this update would not be done until post all Legions having at least their base rules and the time of a new Army List book for them.

Fast forward to now though and a few of these tid bits have been changed, we've had units updated in an FAQ outside of the book twice now (Custodes, Consuls, Drop Pods and the new stuff) and a shiny new profile for Destroyers to test out! I don't think they have a profile in Malevolence, else why release the FAQ for a months testing when it's already printed?

Just seen the FQ...wow. Phalanx Wardens are so nice right now, much cheaper (much cheaper than regular breachers), cheaper axes, WS5 and 2A when recieving the charge.

I have a question regarding herald. I wonder about wording of the Banner of Aquila (?) - it says models within 12" of him get +1 WS to a max of 6 INCLUDING the herald...who's WS5. Does it mean he get's no bonus from his banner?

Yes he'd get the buff.

The Phalanx Warder buffs make a Hammerfall strike force so much sexier.

Debatable; the RoW still actively works against itself.

But yes, Phalanx Warders are actually pretty decent now and when taken with Dorn and/or Stone Gauntlet, theyre all the more worth it.
