Magos Takatus
Hi, I am looking to try using oil washes on my models and I hear in order to do so applying a gloss varnish is desirable to protect the paint. I am curious what the general opinion is on the various varnishes available on the market, how well they go through an airbrush and how easy they are to clean up afterward. I'm aware of Vallejo and Liquitex as brands that sell varnishes but I'd like to get some experience from people first-hand. I also hear some people use floor polish but as for brands and availability in the UK I don't really know much in that regard. Thanks for reading, I hope you can help me out. Aspecti
I use Vallejo varnishes, both through an airbrush and with a normal brush. I haven't had any trouble cleaning the airbrush after using a varnish, using Vallejo's airbrush cleaner. My airbrush is a fairly old Badger 150, http://www.badgerairbrush.com/badger_150.asp Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353796-airbrush-friendly-gloss-varnish/#findComment-5254069 Share on other sites
Mango Polo
I use all three varnishes (matt, satin, gloss) from the Vallejo Premium Airbrush Color line and they have been excellent both in spraying and clean up. Aarik
I've used the vallejo gloss and matte. Both work fine through the airbrush with some thinning. And afterwards, I just make sure to run plenty of water and then cleaner through the brush. Maschinenpriester
I am also very happy with vallejo. I also used some AK matte varnish but i had issues with that one. I went a it smokey with the airbrush. Since then i only use vallejo stuff. Magos Takatus
Thank you everyone, that's pretty solidly in favour of Vallejo. I'll order some in that case. White Wolf
Ammo of Mig Jimenez produce an excellent range of air brush ready varnishes, I also use Minitaire varnish by Badger, excellent as well, but does need a bit of thinning. Imren
I'd get the new Vallejo Mecha line of varnishes, they are supposed to have higher scratch resistance than the regular vallejo varnishes. https://www.waylandgames.co.uk/mecha-color/51319-mecha-color-60ml-gloss-varnish Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353796-airbrush-friendly-gloss-varnish/#findComment-5255832 Share on other sites
Arkhanist
I switched to the vallejo premium varnishes a while back; the range is intended for rc cars, motorcycle helmets etc, so is intended to be particularly tough. I've found the premium matte to be definitely more matte than standard vallejo polyurethane varnish, and it's doing its job so far of protecting the minis. The mecha line is nice generally though for our kinda thing, and supposedly the mecha primer is quite a bit more robust than standard vallejo primer. Vallejo do so many different varnish lines now though, it's getting silly. Magos Takatus
I got a 500ml bottle of Vallejo acrylic varnish. In hindsight it's a ridiculous sized bottle for what I need. I'll have to varnish models on an industrial scale for this to be a sensible purchase. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353796-airbrush-friendly-gloss-varnish/#findComment-5256095 Share on other sites
Laughingman
Maybe its just me, but I usually end up thinning my acrylic varnishes before shooting them, given the less then ideal temps I end up working in... blackbabyjesus
Ahh, wish I'd seen this sooner, pre-oil wash I always use pledge floor polish. It's about £2.50 for a litre bottle and sprays through an airbrush neat.
