I've posted this in tutorials and my own project thread on the chaos space marine board, but then I thought it might be the most useful here.

 

Here's a simple tutorial for making chaos 8-pointed stars out of plasticard.  The same technique would likely work for cardbaord if you wanted stars on a curved surface (like a space marine shoulder pad).

 

 

1.   Make squares from thin plasticard.  Mine were 5mm, though after gluing them to the models (see below) I wish I had made them a little smaller, though at 5mm they were fiddly enough already.  

 

2.  Cut triangles out of each side.

3.  You should now have 2 pointy little crosses:

4.  Glue the crosses together.

And here they are in use on some models - genestealer cultists are that are now chaos cultists:
