Looking for more firepower.

I had my first game with the new codex earlier this week. Both my opponent and I decided that I was lacking ranged firepower. My list was roughly as follows:

HQ

Primus

Iconward

Abominant

Troops

10 Neophytes with shotguns

10 Brood Brothers with 2 grenade launchers and a mortar team

6 Acolytes (without any fancy heavy weapons as only playing

1000 points)

Elites

12 genestealers

5 Aberrants

Kelermorph

Sanctus with relic sniper

Fast Attack

Sentinel with heavy flamer

Heavy Support

Rock Grinder with clearance incinerator.

I know that it is not the most optimised list and I certainly didn't play my best ever game (I forgot some rules and only spent around a third of my cp).

Is it as simple as adding two cult russ battle tanks if so 3 heavy bolters each or plasma sponsons with a hull mounted lascannon?

Any thoughts?

I'd say no personally, vehicles on the whole aren't that good for GSC now, might be better with a big blob of Flamers and demo charges combined with lying in wait, the grenade strat and possibly perfect ambush (could be overkill). Gives you something to spend cp on too!

Any thoughts?

Let's look at that list with a bit of formatting:

Genestealer Cult 1000 pts

HQ

Primus

Iconward

Abominant

Troops

10 Neophytes with shotguns

10 Brood Brothers (2 grenade launchers, mortar team)

6 Acolytes (barebones)

Elites

12 genestealers

5 Aberrants

Kelermorph

Sanctus with relic sniper

Fast Attack

Sentinel with heavy flamer

Heavy Support

Rock Grinder with clearance incinerator.

What I notice is that you run only two vehicles - giving your enemy just two targets for their antitank weapons. Since you didn't mention which detachment was used, you may need the sentinel to cheaply fill the fast attack slot. Replacing the Rockgrinder with e.g. brood brother heavy weapon teams gives you long ranged firepower and frees up points for adding weapons to other units - e.g. adding a heavy weapons team to the first neophyte squad, which would improve the firepower further. You may be able to then use leftover points for acolyte weapons, depending on what you equip the heavy weapons teams with.

Is anyone using Achilles Ridgerunners with Heavy Mining Lasers? I know they're probably not the "best" unit but that model is spectacular. I was looking at running a unit of 3 with a cheap mortar Ridgerunner in there to tank wounds, but I've cut it down to 2 with Lasers in my list.

After the scout move they can hopefully stay still to stop being at -1 to hit.
