Display Placards

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Lately ive been seeing more and more graphically intense display plinth titles on the painting competition scene as opposed to the old school engraved style.

Stuff like:

Any insight as to how these are created? Seems to me it looks printed and shellaced onto plasticard or something.

Looks like it could be large MDF rod that's been turned on a lathe or maybe a slab of acrylic which also comes in rods this large if you go to a plastic supplier, and then painted with a heavy body black paint-primer that's used on lots of modern furniture. It's hard to tell if they're premade or something that they just produced themselves; if you keep your eyes open for such things you can find all sorts of materials for things like this, usually being discarded, and barring that you can find suppliers that can get the raw materials you might need.

Now if you referring specifically to the placards, they appear to be good quality colour prints (a modestly good quality printer with the right paper can give photo-quality results) done on heavy stock or mounted on a piece of some heavy material that's then attached to the base; the top one is likely a piece of styrene glued on properly with some 5-minute epoxy or CA and the bottom one looks like they used some spray adhesive to attach it. A bit of time in Photoshop or some other graphics software and you can put something together like these quite quickly.

I suspect it's only a matter of time until 3D printed display bases start to appear that provide even more options to add some visual interest to the composition, so while I don't think they're used here I think your instinct is right and we'll see things like that in the near future.

The plinth in the second picture is made from resin. They are done by Dark Messiah Bases. I got a few from there for busts and other stuff.

Good to know thanks! I was mainly inquiring about the placards, I’ve edited the topic just in case.
