How to Maximize HWT Boxset

I'm just starting out with the Guard here. Im picking up a HWT box. Now I've seen people make more that 3 HWT from one box. What is the most you can make from a single box and with buying the 5 cadian troop box?

Bonus: Im hoping to build 3 mortar teams. What should be the other teams?

Maximum is 3 without added work, though you can push that to 4 if youre happy with a tripod stand-in. Mortar with two standing guys, missile launcher with two standing guys, and two of the following three with a kneeling guy each: heavy bolter, lascannon, autocannon. The sandbags in the kit might work for the tripod though, would be up to you.

There are several places (3rd party, ebay ect.) you can by the extra bits to make every weapon in the whole kit.  Just be mindful of what your spending to keep it worth while.

Yeah watch this carefully - you can get new box for £18 in UK - and the box has useful bits.

An infantry squad box and more 60mm round bases (the 3 pack from GW with the dreadnought or eldar war walker bases is nice imho).

As has been said, the standing legs can be used for a standing pose, or for a HWT which is carrying their weapon and hasn't deployed yet, or for a spotter laying down, feeding ammo to the heavy bolter or peeking over the top of the prepared position. The rucksack bitz from the HWT can make for a makeshift firing position in place of the tripod.

That way, most or all of the weapon options can be build.

The 5-pack cadians are best used as is as filler models for conscripts or infantry squads. Being monopose makes them harder to convert.

If you insist on using the monoposers, the easiest afaik would be putting two on a 60mm base, replacing the first ones one arm with the arm-holding-mortar-round from the HWT (and maybe adding a backpack), giving him a pointing arm for the other arm and having the second trooper carry the mortar on the back. A length of wire (or similar material) could be run over the second models shoulder, across the torso and below the other shoulder and back before glueing the mortar in place to model a holding/carrying strap.

Hrmm this comes up often enough we should have a resource link for this...

Here's another thread where Elmo discusses how you can achieve this too
