Movies that inspire - Chaos edition

I recently watched two movies that really made me think a lot about Chaos and what it would be like to live in the Warp/Eye of Terror.  The first movie is "Mandy," in which we see Nicholas Cage begin the Path of Glory.  The second is "The Endless," which struck me as what it might be like to live in the Eye of Terror.  I won't say more about either because I don't want to give any spoilers.  If you haven't watched these movies, you should definitely do it.

What movies inspire you to ponder Chaos or living in the Warp/Eye of Terror?

Oh, I forgot about Event Horizon.  That's a good one.  Another one worth checking out is Ghosts of Mars.  It's an older movie, I think from the early 2000s, and the special effects are a bit dated, but the movie is basically about what happens when the Ruinous Powers begin to exert their influence on a mining colony on Mars.  Despite being a bit dated, it's still a good movie.

Since this subject matter has a risk of deviating a lot from the intended purpose I'm just gonna poke in with a little reminder for the future. Don't forget to tie it in with 40k and when it inevitibly comes to Slaaneshi things, remember where you are... ;)

Event Horizon is pretty much just about flying through the warp without a Gellar Field.

Definitely!

Speaking of Slaaneshi themes, these films overlaps greatly with themes associated with Dark Eldar, but imho Hellraiser I and II.

These were made in the '80s, so they knew they could show people being ripped apart body, mind and soul, but NOT naughty bits.  They avoided crossing that line by the antagonists describing themselves as "explorers in the further regions of experience" as well as "demons to some, angels to others".  Clive Barker had these great turns of phrase that suggest without quite stating.  Really neat ideas, very quotable.

For those seeing it for the 1st time, it will seem like a very dated campy '80s horror film in a haunted house, but halfway through it truly becomes timeless because it's about an infinite dimension of pleasure that becomes pain, and pain that becomes pleasure.

Edit - thx for those new film recommendations btw, I didn't know about those, will play them in the background while I paint some Gellerpox.

I'm not sure if this counts but there is loads of anime out there to inspire.

I think the Thing is an obvious choice for me. Watching the film now when it's what 35 years old? Is still jaw dropping.

Another kurt rustle one is Soldier. A little tacky but good action flick with super soldiers.

And love thenm or hate them the dred films

Last but not least starship troopers.

Hilariously enough, I have never found one specific movie that inspires me with my Chaos. Back when I played Black Templars, Kingdom of Heaven. was my greatest inspiration and I still find myself going back to watch that movie relatively often.

Largely, much of my inspiration comes from ancient mythology and Ecclesiastic Literature, or the Dark Souls/Bloodborne game series. But, since this is a matter of movies, I suppose I'll give one. If there was any movie that I would say has genuinely played a part in inspiration for me and my work at least (and not because of the fact that it was a major inspiration for Dark Souls) it would have to be the most recent movie adaptations of the Berserk series. To be more specific, it's the third movie in the Golden Age Arc: Eclipse, that I always find myself watching over and over again. As a Word Bearer player and a die hard fan of Chaos, there's so much I take inspiration from in this movie.

The Necromongers in Chronicles of Riddick always struck me as a military organization that deeply incorporates a faith/religious facet to their structure that's analogous to how I picture a well-supplied Chaos host might operate. Perhaps not quite Chaos Marines and more like an extremely elite Renegades and Heretics force, but I think they'd fit right into a corner of the 40k universe as a renegade sub-system attempting to assert it's autonomy because they've been influenced by Chaos. The costuming, props, and various sets and settings of the entire film are quite grim dark if you look past Riddick and pay attention to everything in the background.

A recent Netflix movie called Annihilation, about an alien object landing that creates an expanding zone of very weird, warp-like effects on everything living, and it had me thinking it was an interesting way to visualize how Tzeench might overtly 'infect' a planet to turn it into a daemon world. Again, not really something that's excessively military or Marine-centric, but definitely something that could pass as a story about a Chaos incursion being investigated by a local population.

Hereditary.

I don't want to spoil it, but that movie oozes with the influence of the Dark Gods. It provides inspiration for anyone who wants to see how a subversive Chaos cult can function. I recommend watching the movie in the dark, with headphones.

Back when I was building a emperors children force I found alot of inspiration for rhino decorations in the first silent hill movie.

Also thier is a bit in wolf creek with the crucifix and dogs that I thought was a good fit as well.

Hellraiser was a good one as well, abit dated but the themes were well worth exploring

Man that army was twisted
